The story is not for the faint-of-heart. It deals with a sensitive subject, however Ms. Novak does not go into unnecessary descriptions and nothing is sensationalized.
The first book of an ongoing series, involves a family living a comparatively normal life, considering the Reverend (their step-father) had disappeared OR had he been murdered; by one of them?
The story centers around Grace, who was a young teen at the time and her horrid high school experience with "affluent boys" and how she deals with them and the family mystery 13 years later. She's now a successful assistant DA; upon her return to her hometown, (in an attempt to salvage her present, by resolving this issue from her past) she has to suffer the rude and insulting small-town people, who can't get over the unsolved mystery surrounding her step-father. She knows who and why; it's time to confront the truth.
A special character, who was just precious, in the little 8 year old boy that befriends her, on her first day back in town. Her interaction with him is just heart-warming. Grace's subsequent meeting of the young boy's family is part of what makes this book so compelling.

In the first of a compelling new series set in the small town of Stillwater, Novak expertly mixes her usual superior characterization with a chilling sense of evil as she pairs up a complicated heroine with a dark past with a caring, honorable man who gives her hope for the future.

Started off slow...didn't pick up speed by page 100 so I gave up. Life is too short for slow books!

This book held my attention and I hated to put it down. I have read other books by this author and have not been diappointed. Could not wait for the book 2 in this series.
I really liked this first book in the Dead trilogy. Romance, murder and suspense all wrapped up in one story. I just found out the author and I both live in Sacramento.
Brenda Novak is becoming one of my favorite authors....she delivers a great story which keeps you with her book in hand at every possible moment
This is a great book about a woman who returns back to the small town she grew up in to help protect her family's secrets. When she was thirteen years old, her brother killed her stepfather to protect her, and they buried the body. People have always suspected them, but now someone might actually find the evidence that leads them to the truth. I can't wait for the next book in this series!
loved it

A FANTASTIC READ!
good mystery
This is the first book I read by this author and I am totally hooked. Before I was even half way through the book I knew I had to get the other two in this trilogy. From the first page to the end this is an exceptionally intense, powefully emotional novel. This is romantic suspense at its best. No time to stop to eat or sleep from page one to the end.
a good series
I just finished Dead Silence by Brenda Novak. It is not a new book but it was a very good read. It is about a woman who has been emotionally damaged and is trying to live a normal life. But there is a family secret that is causing great distress. I can't wait to read the next volume in this trilogy.
Great Read, autographed copy
