This book was great. I won't give away any more spoilers than my vague summary already has, but I will cheer and say that the moment I've been waiting for DID happen in chapter 6. Now, if only it could have stayed that way. In the end, as a reader, I know that Sookie and Bill will make up and get back together and continue their great love affair.

The grand bulk of this story was spent working out the relationship between Sookie and Eric, investigating Jason's disappearance, and searching for the very dangerous coven of witches that cursed Eric. The final battle scene is very tense and well played out, though not in clear drawn out detail since it is from the perspective of Sookie who is understandably out of it.

We have new creatures and supernatural elements, too! As I said above, witches are introduced along with fairies. Now those can be added to the growing catalog of creatures and things Sookie has to interact with on a daily (and nightly) basis.

I am almost disappointed that Eric's time may be over. I feel that he certainly shines brighter and with more character than Bill. After spending an entire book with Eric, Bill's entrance at the end was... bland, at best. He just seems monotonous next to the personality that Eric exudes. If Eric could just get over himself, he would be perfect. Still, I cling to hope because surely the Eric that he was when he didn't have a memory is still in him... somewhere.

I am completely addicted to this series. Anne Rice might have defined the vampire in my eyes, but Charlaine Harris makes them fun. Gratuitous sex? Give me more of that, please. Some more violence and humor, too. This series is just one big ball of excitement for me.

After being disappointed with the first three books in the series this was a nice surprise. (I've been SOOO trying to like them because I've enjoyed the series on HBO.) This was definitely the best novel in the series so far. The author (or her editors) have improved upon the story by keeping it more of a focused, working plot not quite such a jumbled mess like the first books.

Although, there's still something lacking in the writing and the author has to stop assuming that we know exactly what's going on in her (the author's) head when she has a character refer to something in a conversation (or their head) without elaborating it. This has happened a few times and when I'm as tired as I am reading a book before bed, I'd prefer to "have my hand" held on stuff like that so I don't have to lay and wonder "What the heck are they referring to?" It's distracting when I'm trying to relax (if that makes sense).

I have really gotten to like Eric, who is the character that keeps going in this book. I also get a kick out of Bubba (except for the cat thing). Pam, though not in the book as often is also pretty cool.

Overall the story is good and has gotten better, even though predictable. I'll continue reading these at leisure just in case a lot of book plot comes through the tv series. :)

Sookie Stackhouse "Southern Vampire" mystery number four. Speaking of gratuitous sex and sexual tension...AAAAGH! This book is full of it! I've enjoyed the previous Sookie books, and yeah, there was some of that...and some sexual tension is almost necessary to the story line. But in this book, every male that crosses Sookie's path causes her to salivate, for heaven's sake! The frequent descriptions of the various males' physiques got really old after awhile. I'm not a prude by any stretch of the imagination, but with sex just for the sake of sex--or if not actual sex, then thinking about it constantly--seeming to become a major theme, I find I did not enjoy this one very much. Maybe this is what most of the fans of paranormal books want, but as for me--no thank you. If I want erotic titillation, I'll hook up with some good erotica! I finished this book, and do mostly enjoy the storyline, but for the reasons stated above I really lowered my grade and I do believe I'm just going to stop reading the series right here. It's okay, but I'd rather read books where I'm not rolling my eyes every few pages when the heroine is drooling on some guy.

I so love this series. This has been one of the funnier books so far in my humble opinion. Although, in all honesty, I think I would have prefer Eric to have been "himself" so to speak while with Sookie. She sure is meeting some interesting folks! :-)

I was really hooked on the first three books, but this one left me thinking maybe I am done with the series. It took me a while to get hooked into the book, but I kept reading with hopes that it would improve. Every male figure in the book had some sexual tension with Sookie, which begans to seem more like a space filler then actually contributing to the development of the plot. The whole relationship with Sookie and Eric was bizarre and empty feeling. Overall the book was lacking. I am still in limbo about continuing the series.

Charlaine Harris continues her southern vampire detective series with this 4th book in the series. Sookie is again the main character which I was happy to note since she's a charming, funny character in love with a vampire. Harris gives us strong, well-built characters and an action-packed plot. I love the black humor Harris uses. In this book there's a dangerous battle among witches, vampires and werewolves. As usual, Sookie finds herself in the middle of it all. A delightful, fun book!

O.K...I REALLY didn't think I would get into this series...Up until about 2 months ago the show True Blood was just something I had heard about...I COULD not put this book down...Harris is a great spinner of the absurd and I have to say that I've always been smitten with vampire stories...This is unlike any I have seen or read about before...I have fallen hard for Sookie and you will too...It's campy and fun and ADDICTING!!! I read all 11 books in the matter of about 4 weeks...Needless to say that I have some housework to catch up on...

First of all, just because you have seen the TV series doesn't mean that you can jump into the middle of the books and understand who Sookie is. Start at the beginning and your appreciation for Sookie will go a lot further.

While Vampire Bill is off in Peru continuing his research, Sookie is reevaluation their relationship. That in itself creates a problem since Sookie has no limit to other men that are all so easily available to her.

While driving home from a New Year's party at Merlott's, Sookie is distracted by a naked man running alongside the road, but unfortunately, this isn't just any man, this is Eric, the very delectable Sheriff of Area 5 who has not kept silent his attraction to Sookie. To compound this situation, Eric appears to be have a case of amnesia. He remembers nothing about who he is or for that matter, who Sookie is. Oh, dear, could this get any worse, well, apparently it can.

Not only does Bon Temps have to deal with vampires, werewolves, and shape shifters, there is now a coven of very powerful witches that are attempting to take over Area 5.

Well, you can't leave a naked man on the side of the road, so Sookie has decided to take Eric home to care for him. In so doing, she begins to see a very sensitive side to the very scary Eric, a side that Sookie finds quite irresistible.

Charlaine Harris builds quite a strong story this time. With her usual humor and "where did that come from, but I love it" story writing, Sookie and Eric are enmeshed in one adventure after another that makes Sookie life with Bill seem rather normal. This is a great series, that blends just enough action and humor to keep the reader fully enthralled with Sookie.

Overall, I have thoroughly enjoyed the Sookie Stackhouse Series. They are so much fun to read. Lots of laughs, danger, intrigue. Out of all of the Sookie books, this is my favorite. I do have a soft spot for Eric, so to have him so prominently featured was a bonus. It keeps you wondering "what if...?"

Definitely start with Book 1, though, so you can thoroughly enjoy every moment of this amazing series.

I ate this book up like it was dark chocolate and I was PMS-ing. I absolutely loved the story line with Eric in this book. I could not put this book down. We all want that confidant guy that will take care of us in the end...I loved that the gore was not glazed over in this book, and can only hope that it is carried out appropriately in the TV series. The sub plot with Sookie's brother Jason left me a bit confused, but I suppose events will unfold in the next book. One of the juiciest parts is the resolution with the Debbie character (Alcide's girlfriend). Go Sookie! You ROCK!

I'm probably the only one here that wants Sookie and Bill back together. She loved Bill, she never "loved" Eric. With that said, this book was my least favorite of the series so far, BUT..I'd still give it 4 stars because it was so hard to put down. Another post said Bill's entrance at the end was bland, I didn't think so. But you already know I'm a Bill fan.

I just don't see Sookie having a meaningful anything with Eric. But with Bill I see her with him long term. Hopefully his time away will make him appreciate her more and all the more regretful of his indiscretions. I don't like the way the author can't seem to write in a new male character without instantly them lusting after or falling in love with Sookie. Come on now mrs Harris!

I LOVE where it seems like Jason's storyline is going. I loved the new characters and the new people. I like getting a little more of Pam. I really like getting to know Alcide's pack and discovering the Hotshot group. Sam didn't seem to have as big a role this book, but that's fine by me, I was tired of his pining after Sookie..in this book he's just there when she needs him as a good friend. Can't wait to read the next one.

Ok, so I watched True Blood on tv and had never heard of Charlaine Harris. I started this series out of boredom and read the whole series straight through in less than a week. Can't wait for the next one. All of the books are a tad repetitive on the character description (how many times do I have to hear about Sam's halo of strawberry blonde hair or Eric's Nordic good looks?) but very entertaining, light hearted and thoroughly addictive. You won't be sorry.

In preparation for Season 4 of True Blood and to take some of the waiting sucks edge off myself it was time to dust off my copy of Dead to the World, book 4 in the Southern Vampire series. This book is perhaps one of the funniest I have read in a while. It does deal with some serious subject matter and that stays serious, but the idea of watching Eric Northman act like a lost little boy? Oh it makes the whole thing ripe for a great deal of humor.
I am the first to admit that the first few books were a bit of a slog for me; I enjoyed them but not as much as the show. I can honestly say this book I will enjoy as much if not more than the show this season. The book is well written and the story weaves together seamlessly this time. Perhaps it is the lack of the I love you I hate you with Bill? Hard to say, but it is the best book so far by far. Any book that says, If there was an international butt completion Eric would win hands down or cheeks up. Gets my vote.

I've never watched the HBO series, and I don't plan on it anytime soon. I've loved the book series so much, the TV show is guaranteed to disappoint me.

The 1st book made me fall for Sookie and her men, and after I finished it, I immediately ordered every other book in the series. I just finished Dead in the Family (Book 9, I believe?) and I can't wait until Charlaine publishes her next one. I hope they go on for at least several more. I'm so involved in these books that when I finish one, I don't read anything else for days so I can just think about the one I've finished.

And I'm very much Team Eric.

As a fan of the True Blood series, I found some of the events of this book to be difficult to accept. However, once I let go of my preconceptions, I really enjoyed it. The introduction of the other "supes" including witches left me wanting to learn more. Alas, this is not the series for that. But, the book remains a pleasant read where I could escape to a fantasy world.

This is my favorite book from the "Sookie Stackhouse" series so far. Harris just keeps layering more 'supes' (supernaturals) in each of the books and the more they relate to Sookie, the more I want to read. The more the series matures, in character development and back story, the more I like it.

Sookie's New Year's resolution was just to not get beat up again. It only took a few hours for that resolution to be challenged. An the story rockets off from there. Bill was a very minor character in this book, and Eric took the starring role next to Sookie. It was a nice change of pace. Now I have to get started on book #5 ([Dead as a Doornail) to see what new troubles Sookie will get herself into, and out of....

They just keep getting more exciting as I go along, and I have no doubt I'll be well and truly hooked soon. Just don't get upset that the books at this point cease to bear any more than the faintest resemblance to the TV series, though I don't know how you could, since the books are definitely better at this point.

The first two of the Sookie Stackhouse novels did not inspire me to read more in the series. Even so, the books seem to get more impressive as I get through them. Book 4 in the Sookie Stakehouse series. This series is one of my guilty pleasures. It would be easy to pick apart the plots and characters, but when it comes down to it they're just plain fun. In Dead to the World, Eric the Vampire has lost his memory and Sookie must keep him from the witches trying to take over his territory. Eric has always been my favorite vampire, but this more vulnerable side to him is irresistible. If you liked the other Sookie Stackhouse books, you'll love this one.

I was extremely dissapointed with this book(this series as a whole really). The characters seem so flat, and lacking personality. There are huge gaps in the plot and it seems that Mrs. Harris likes to take the easy way out in her story climaxes. I also didn't like how loose sookie seems-One minute she's w/ Alcide thinking about babies and the next she's making love to Eric and thinking about bill! I mean geez! pick one already! That being said- I do LOVE what they've done with the TV show, Its an EXTREME improvement to the story and Characters. So I would say skip the books and just enjoy the show!

I enjoyed this book the most in the series, so far. It takes us farther into Sookie's story and actually left me excited for the next book, which the other three haven't done. This was the first one that I didn't have to force myself to read. Charlaine's style of writing is so perfunctory that it intrigues me so I keep reading, but I actually enjoyed this one. It's also the first one that shifts the focus away from Sookie's relationship with Bill, which is a relief and shows us better insight to her other relationships as well as unfolding new possibilities.
denisemarie avatar reviewed Dead to the World (Sookie Stackhouse, Bk 4) on + 16 more book reviews
Hands down my favorite of my favorites! In my opinion, this is the best book of the Sookie Stackhouse series. Now, that may be due to my unhealthy obsession with the character of Eric Northman, but I honestly think it is just incredibly entertaining. When Eric loses his memory (due to a spell cast by an evil witch named Hallow,) he ends up staying with Sookie in hiding while the witch is hunted down. During this time, he forgets all about his place in vampire politics and becomes almost human in his emotional state. The ensuing romance between Sookie and Eric is nothing short of electrifying. The action is still in place as the war that ensues when Hallow is found is intense. Oh, and Sookie's brother Jason is missing and again it falls to her to track him down. But this book is so sexy, it tends to overshadow the rest of the plot, not that I minded! Do not miss this one, it portrays my concept of the essence of this series better than any of the other 9 books. A little of everything I love about Charlaine Harris!

Ms. Harris does it again. In this book (4th in the series) Bill is pretty much out of the picture. Which I think is kind of nice. I liked Bill but not what he did in the last book. This book is more focused on Eric. A hot viking vampire! Sookie is coming home from a tiring night at work only to find Eric half naked running down the road. Sookie stops to find out what he's doing only to find out he doesn't even know what he's doing. Someone has erased his memory. As Sookie becomes his care taker, feelings start to emerge for this "new" Eric who is much different from the old Eric. In all this Sookie's brother ends up missing and a battle between the supernaturals and witches is about to take place. These books are always full of action and something happening. They are just pure fun. I highly recommend these books if you are a fan of the first 3. If you haven't read the first 3 books, I highly recommend that you do!

If you are contemplating this book, then you are likely familiar with the series. This is book four, and I HIGHLY recommend that you read the first three prior to beginning this one, as this is one of those series which depends heavily on the books prior.

In this book, Eric is seen in a much different light. This book deviates quite a bit from the TrueBlood series on HBO, but a lot of the characters are similar enough that they are recognizable.

What more can I say about this one than has already been said? If you read and enjoyed the first few books in the series, then you will like this one as well - it's more of the same, but highly entertaining as "fluff" goes, if you like this genre.

I'm enjoying this series a lot. After watching a few episodes of HBO's True Blood, I wasn't sure if the books were going to start jumping around and skipping things (as in the TV series) but am pleased with the continuity and progress of Sookie's story. This 4th book in the series introduced a truly loveable and caring Eric and it added a lot for me. Also, it seems every book introduces us to another type of "other world segement" and that is also fun.

Truly loved this book.

This is my favorite in the series so far! I just loved this book. Sookie finds herself in a very interesting position, that is the highlight of this book. Very little is seen of Bill, for which I am glad. Without Bill, the story moves very smoothly, with a dramatic ending. Sookie actually seems to be doing better with her personal life with the removal of Bill.

I agree with all the criticisms - but this is still a fun to read series! I liked this one because it focused more on Eric who is of course a much more alluring character then Bill. I find it annoying that every supe is panting over Sookie, but I did like the turn this story took with the Eric character.

#4 in the Sookie Stackhouse series, but my first.

I'd highly recommend this for fans of Laurell Hamilton's earlier installments of her Anita Blake series, or of Robin McKinley's 'Sunshine.' The set-up is very similar - modern world, but vampires have 'gone public.' And our protagonist has relationships with them.

In this installment, Sookie, a human but telepathic waitress, has recently broken up with her vampire beau. Then, her brother goes missing. To top it all off, she finds a powerful vampire club owner acquaintance of hers running down the street, half-naked, and a victim of amnesia. Sookie takes him into her home for protection so that the powerful evil witches who are out to take over his financial empire don't find him... and things soon get rather complicated.

Definitely light reading, but charming and fun...

I love Eric but it was weird to see him without his memory and then very sad when his memory returned and he then didn't remember what had happened while his memory was gone. *sigh* Poor Sookie. I hope things turn out better for her in the next book!

Hmmm it's hard for me to write a review on this today. This was probably my least favorite of the series so far but having said that I still think with each book in the Southern Vampire series it gets better than the last.

Personally, I didn't like the new cursed, nice Eric. I found him boring. The fact that Sookie finally sleeps with him and begins to love him was the only redeeeming quality with Eric. Well that and the fact that the curse was eventually broken and we get the old, smart-ass Eric back constantly trying to get in her pants. My other issue is that Bill is back for all of 1/2 chapter and then there is no mention of where he goes at all (after the battle).

It's disappointing that this one didn't hold my interest quite as much as the others but I still think it's a fantastic series to follow.

Sookie Stackhouse continues to be fun! Having an affair with an amnesiac vampire can be interestingly dangerous to your own life, it would seem. Moreover, having the Weres constantly popping up in it can be confusing, frustrating and dangerous to life and limb. Climb back on board to find out how she manages the new stressors in her life!

This is the fourth book in the Southern Vampire Mysteries that follow Sookie Stackhouse through her not so regular life.

Sookie's at it again. It's New Year's Eve and her resolution was to not get beat up. It sounds odd, but it's the one thing she desperately wants.

Bill, Sookie's ex-vampire-boyfriend leaves for Peru on his project that began in the third book. (Although, I just think this may have been a measure for the author to get Bill out of the picture for awhile.) Sookie's alone and trying to work through everything. On her way home from work that evening she spots a man running through the woods sans clothing. Sookie being Sookie, she stops to help only to discover it's the Sheriff of Area 5, Eric.

Eric cannot remember a thing. He doesn't recognize Sookie and Sookie herself is not sure if he's pretending or if his memory is really gone. She helps him and brings him to her house. Eric is completely different from the Eric she knows and she starts to fall into lust more and more and eventually gives in.

Sookie tries to figure out whats wrong with Eric, only to discover there is a bounty put on him for $50,000. Not a small chunk of change for someone like Sookie. However, she protects him anyway and discovers that a coven of Witches are out to get Shreveport, which happens to include Eric.

It all comes down to another battle between the vampires, weres, shape-shifters, and the coven of witches.

The ending for me was a little bit disappointing but I see why it had to go in that direction. If it hadn't the stories would have probably had to end there. I still enjoyed it thoroughly and want to dive head first into book 5.

I this fourth book in the series, telepathic Louisiana barmaid Sookie Stackhouse finds herself getting mixed up with an evil coven of witches, who for some reason want to capture the vampire Eric Northman for their own purposes. Also, Sookie's borther Jason goes missing without a clue. Is Jason's disappearance somehow linked to the witches showing up in Bon Temps?

I enjoyed this story, another great entry in the Sookie Stackhouse series.

I've been enjoying this series so far. I liked this book a lot more than I expected to because I wasn't crazy about "Eric under a spell" on True Blood. I found it more believable in the book. Although I like True Blood a lot, I am enjoying the books in a completely different way because they are only from Sookie's point of view. I felt the witch involvement could have used a bit more backstory/explanation but otherwise I thought this book was great, sexy, fun and I flew through it!

It's not every day that you come across a naked man on the side of the road. That's why cocktail waitress Sookie Stackhouse doesn't just drive on by. Turns out the poor thing hasn't a clue who he is, but Sookie does. It's Eric the vampire--but now he's a kinder, gentler Eric. And a scared Eric, because whoever took his memory now wants his life. Sookie's investigation into who and why leads straight into a dangerous battle among witches, vampires, and werewolves. But a greater danger could be to Sookie's heart--because this version of Eric is very difficult to resist...

If you dont mind a well used book {no loose or missing pages} here it is. My second in the series is the same shape but again a great read. I am now hooked on this series.
