Jenn McKinlay (AKA Josie Belle) is one of the few authors who compels me to read about things that don't interest me. She writes a series about hats. I could care less about hats, but I read and enjoyed Cloche and Dagger. I don't enjoy shopping and/or bargain hunting, but I really enjoy this Good Buy Girl series. The main reasons for this are McKinlay's writing style, her sense of humor, and the characters she creates.

In this series-- and this book-- two characters are standouts: Maggie Gerber and Summer Phillips, Maggie's rival. I'm tempted to say that Summer is too over-the-top, but I know women like her. Summer is guaranteed to raise blood pressure to dangerously high levels, and every time she appears on the scene, the first phrase that flits through my mind is "To the moon, Alice!"

Maggie on the other hand, is the best sort of friend a person could have. Yes, she's got a temper, but she knows how to stand up for herself and others, and she genuinely cares about people. She and handsome Sheriff Sam Collins strike sparks off each other each time they meet, and it's fun to watch their relationship progress.

The mystery in A Deal to Die For is a particularly good one. It twists, it turns, it doubles back on itself-- and many secrets are revealed about secondary characters along the way. There are no cardboard cutout folks in a Jenn McKinlay novel.

I may never enjoy shopping, but I certainly am looking forward to the next adventure of the Good Buy Girls.

Maggie is about to open her resale/consignment shop and hoping to pick up some stock at the local flea market. She stops at Vera's booth, after hearing that she was selling some of her dress collection, but Vera is not there. Vera is found dead at Doc's office, with Doc holding a syringe over her body. Maggie and the Good Buy girls try to clear Doc's name by searching for the killer.
The suspect was on my list, but not at the top. There were quite a few twists in the plot, and the budding love story left me wanting for more.

Maggie Gerber needs just the right merchandise to give her secondhand shop, My Sisters Closet, the edge over her vindictive rival Summer Phillips new store that has opened right across the street. The Good Buy Girls have heard that Vera Madison will be selling off her vintage clothing at the St. Stanley flea market and they plan to be first in line.

And thats right where there are when all hell breaks loose. Vera has left her daughter in charge of her booth while she runs a quick errand. But Vera will not be returning. She was just found dead and it has been ruled a murder. The Good Buy Girls learn Vera had more than a few skeletons in her closet and more enemies than shoes. If Maggie wants to get her store open they are going to have to bag a killer before they bag any bargains.

I am loving these Good Buy Girls and the Good Guys are not bad either. Summer Phillips is just plain mean and joined with the evil Courtney sets the reader up for a very entertaining ride.

The mystery was complex and the secrets are revealed in such a way that keeps the reader guessing right up to the very special moment where everything falls into place.

I like the romantic tension/triangle very much. Do you go back to the heartthrob of your youth or try something mature and new? Maggie is cautious and unsure and I hope the author takes her time experimenting with the couples a bit before Maggie falls hard for one or the other. We are left guessing at the end and I refused to read ahead in the teaser chapter for Buried In Bargain because I just dont want to know yet. Plus you know how these stories work, there has to be twists and turns, so I will not so patiently wait to read the entire thing when book #3 is released.

A Deal to Die For should be at the top of your shopping list!

I have gotten hooked on reading this series and like the author. The book was another good one and have already bought the next book in the series. I like this kind of easy, relaxing reading.
