Well here is an oldie for you. Marion Chesney has written romance novels under the pseudonym ANN FAIRFAX, JENNIE TREMAINE, HELEN CROMPTON, CHARLOTTE WARD AND SARAH CHESTER since 1979. Using the pseudonym M.C. BEATON she has written many popular mystery novels, most notably the Agatha Raisin and Hamish Macbeth mystery series. My daughter, Teri, is visiting me for a few days and came into my office as I was beginning to put together this review. She said "Oh my gosh. I have read almost all of her mystery novels and her books are the only one I have kept on my shelf." She said that Marion Chesney's (M.C. Beaton) books make her feel likes she can live in them and that they are comforting. She is going to give me a couple of her favorite to read.
'My Dear Duchess' has a copyright of 1979 and first published by Signet Printing in September 1987. I have been trying to contact Marion Chesney to see if this was her first book but haven't heard back from her. At any case, this was one of her first romance novels. It is part of the Duke and Desires Series.
I really didn't like the information about the book that they had on the back cover. The story has a lot more going on then what they state. I'll give you a little synopsis of the story and hopefully not say too much as to spoil it for you. The story is about Captain Wright. He was infatuated with Clarissa Sayers. She thought he was handsome and kept him around because he adored her but when he proposed she told him she didn't have feelings for him and she was looking for a title. When leaving the house, he met Frederica, Clarissa's younger half sister.
Upon coming home, Captain Wright was met by three men from Randell, Bruton and Sims. They came to inform him that he had inherited the title of Duke of Westerland. He began to laugh thinking what Miss Clarissa Sayers was going to think now. They also informed him that he had to marry within a month or he would not get the old Duke's fortune.
They were interrupted when his butler told him that a young lady was there to visit him. It was Miss Frederica. "I am come to be your mistress Captain Wright". Frederica told him in a loud voice. He was sitting down and talking with her to find out what was going on when his friend, Lord Archie Hefford strode into the room. Frederica quickly confided in him and he turned to the Duke and said -"ain't there somebody else in this room who needs to get married?'" The Duke thrusted his friend from the room.
They decided it would benefit both of them if they were to marry. But what they didn't know was there was a man who thought he should have been the next Duke and revenge was in his future plans for the Captain and Frederica.
I hope I haven't told you too much so as to ruin the first four chapters but I hope this gives you a better idea of where this relationship began and show you the complexity of the rest of the book. I hope you enjoy reading 'My Dear Duchess' as much as I did. Happy Reading! facebook.comreading Genie\
