What makes "Dear John" so compelling is that from the beginning, the reader pretty much knows how it will end - well almost! Even so, I was propelled along, hoping for a different outcome or an unexpected twist. We got that twist, and although it wasn't particularly comfortable, it was totally in keeping with Sparks' understanding of what real love is.

It is Nicholas Sparks what more needs to be said? No really, it is an awsome book. The more this man writes the more he is able to hit that bitter sweet nail right on the head.

I have read all of Nicholas Sparks' books, and while the endings usually have me wanting it to be different, I must say I do enjoy them. This one is no different. Unlike the other gentleman that reviewed this book, I must say that I totally related to this book. Be forwarned, there is a little betrayal in it, but when is there not in love? The characters were very believable. I related to this a lot more than most probably would have as I had something of this manner happen to me. John was a character I could relate to, someone who wasn't sure about what he wanted in life, but knowing he wanted more. When he meets Savannah, he has met his soul mate. While some people don't believe in such, I do, and I can relate to John's devotion to her, no matter what the circumstances, no matter what the betrayal, no matter how much it hurts. While I know that there has never been a sequel done on any oh Sparks' books, this is one that left me saying, no, don't let this happen, it has to be different. I wish he would do a sequel on this one. Definitely a book that requires a box of tissues nearby as it is a tear jerker. If you are looking for a book that will capture your heart, this is it.

I didn't find this one up to his usual standards. Also, he was way off with the military lifestyle portrayal of the lead character, sometimes to the point I (an Army wife) found it laughable. But it's a nice weekend read.

This book is absolutely amazing. Nicholas Sparks does a wonderful job in telling his stories. Any book that can make me laugh and cry both (which I cried plenty at the end of it) is well worth the read. I love how from beginning to end while I'm reading along, I can actually see in my minds eye, everything that is going on. From John and Savannah sitting on the pier, sitting huddled together on the crates in the Habitat house while it's pouring rain, John reading the last letter she ever sent him, everything he went through with his dad, him sitting in the hospital room talking with Tim, all the way to John perched just outside Savannah's ranch waiting to see if she still looks at the moon on the first night of the full moon and to his surprise she does. I can always picture what the characters in a book look like and what not but to be able to actually visualize everything in this book...WOW!!! It truly is a great book. I would post my copy but I just don't think I'm ready to let go of it yet, I may want to read it again sometime.

Absolutely heart breaking. Beautifully moving. Has tremendous emotional depth, revealing the true meaning of unconditional love. Don't attempt this without a box of tissue's. "Brim's with longing" Sparks lives up to his reputation... a tribute to courageous and self-sacrificing soldier's.

This is definitely the worst Nicholas Sparks book that I have read. He's following his formula too closely (young, energetic, happy lovers who can't be together and get seperated, only to be reunited years later - basically, if you've seen The Notebook, you don't need to read this book, it's the same thing, only more annoying. I actually noticed the same exact lines being used in this book that were used in The Notebook. "It was real, wasn't it? You and me? If you've seen the movie as many times as I have, you know what I'm talking about.) The ending is heartwarming, although predictable. Another good thing about this book is the fact that it incorporates some psycology and gives a view of military life, which is different for Sparks (although I don't know how accurate it is.) The narrator, John, is likable enough but I honestly found myself hating Savannah. I just didn't feel like she was a believable character at all, and found myself literally laughing aloud at some of the things she said.

Having enjoyed the movies from "Message in a Bottle" and "Notebook", I anticipated a pleasant, but possibly sad read. I have been somewhat disappointed. I have a hard time relating to the story and to the characters. Savannah is a too-good-to-be-true graduating senior from UNC. She is beautiful, thoughtful, articulate, avid Christian, athletic, enthusiastic, playful and much more. She is saving her self, in the personal intimate ways, for a person she loves where those things would be so much more meaningful. Is that believable? Not to me. Attractive, yes. But page after page reveals her charms, beauty and altruism so much that I began to wonder if the book is about anything else. Sure, I would like to meet her--long ago--the girl of my dreams, but it doth go on to long in that vein.

I loved this book! Which I was not expecting. I loved the fact that it was real. It really had a chance of happening and did not include a lot of over done drama that so many books seem to have, though I admit I do like to fit them in there too. I just felt like I had to find out why (loved the way Sparks started it). Took a turn or two I was not expecting and it showed a few relationships I was not expecting, which I loved.

I found the story to be average at best. It is well-written but I found that I could not identify with the female character. I was disappointed with her reasoning behind why she must write him a "Dear John" letter and found it difficult to believe she ever had true feelings for him in the first place.

If you are looking for an uplifting love story, do not read this book! I finished reading it feeling incredibly heartbroken for the main characters. All in all I liked the book because in reality not every story has a "happily ever after".

I enjoyed this book. I was in the military too so I can understand how John felt. It's like when you are gone life just goes on without you. You just wish there was some way to pause time until you get back. I can understand why he made the choices he did. This book really hit home for me.

Like watching the movie, reading Dear John made me laugh, cry, sigh, and smile several times throughout the book. Although I was not fond of the cliches (i.e. "my love for her grew stronger and stronger") and some of Sparks' stylistic choices, my overall impression of the book was highly favorable. The images he creates astound me, and the ending was heartbreakingly fitting.
I love this book and recommend it to all hopeless romantics (whether you admit to it or not ;D ).

I've read all of Nicholas Sparks books; some are better than others....this one is my favorite along with The Notebook. It had more than one theme in it and I loved that the female character had some morals. There is also a great understanding of people who are different; who have some sort of mental or emotional troubles. I didn't expect it to be more than a romance, but it was and I really liked that!

I'm a Sparks fan, so yes, I'm biased and yes I loved everything about the story from the setting to the main characters to the ending even though it made me wince. Sparks is brilliant at expressing emotion from a man's point of view. John discovers the meaning of love for a parent, for a woman, and ultimately for himself. War as a background only serves to contrast the pain of "real" life.

After reading the preface I should have known I would love this book and I hated it at the same time. The preface reeks of an unhappy ending. As you read the story you instinctively know exactly what is going to happen from one chapter to the other. Nothing is a mystery. This is one of those stories where you hope everyone ends up happy in the end, but the person your pulling for the most gets screwed.

Sparks has such a knack for characterization, which is why I adore his books. But does he have to be so BRUTAL??!! SUCH a sad ending. Almost makes me wish I hadn't read the book.

Another great love story by Nicholas Sparks! I'm a huge fan, and a romantic at heart. I could relate to this story being a military wife who has experienced the goodbyes and the heartbreak that comes after. Sparks told this story so beautifully. And I never would've expected such an ending...as much as you want to know that John and Savannah end up together, the unselfishness and sacrifice at the end is an awesome description of TRUE LOVE. Thank you, Mr. Sparks.
read the book before the movie came out. as with all the nicholas sparks books, i loved it. i don't always like the when they turn the book into a movie, but i watch it nonetheless. the movie was close to the story line which was great. if you have a chance to pick up any nicolas sparks books they are all great (movies too!)

The main character Savannah is from Lenior, NC which is literally 15-20 minutes from my hometown of Morganton. So needless to say I could relate to her. The boy John is from Wilmington which I have been to many times. Savannah goes to UNC which is right up the road from where I am now. So really the whole story felt like it could be written by people I actually might know.
Savannah meets John while he is on leave from his army base in Germany. She is staying with a group of students from UNC who are there for a month to build some houses for Habitat for Humanity. He is there for 2 weeks visiting his dad. Their paths cross and immediately they are smitten with each other. By the time John's leave is up, they are full blown head-over-heels in love.
The rest of the story is about how they try to keep their relationship and love going through letters and short phone conversations and visits. You'll have to read it to find out the rest, but I will tell you it made me think about what true love really looks like and acts like.
It doesn't have that happily ever after ending I love, but it doesn't have that tragic someone dies ending either. At first I hated the ending because it didn't wrap up everything in a nice little happy bow, but I appreciate it and what the author is trying to get across.

This book was a little slow and somewhat predictable. Still worth a read if you're a Nicholas Sparks fan.
Not up to Sparks' earlier stories, in my opinion. The characters are likable and the father, in particular, was exceptionally well depicted. The story is a tear-jerker, let's face it, but the book had more substance than the movie. (I always like the book better.)
This was my first book to read by Nicolas Sparks. It was very good and easy to read, didn't take long to finish. I'll read another by this author!
One of those cases where the book exceeded the movie. Of course that's almost always true but Sparks earlier works The Notebook and A Walk to remember were good adaptations. This one lacked a certain something and yet many younger viewers might like the movie better.
The movie is much, much better than the book. That is rarely the case, but this time it definitely is.
This book wasn't what I thought it would be. Don't get me wrong, it was pretty good, but it was definitely not as good as I had heard from other people. It would be if you're not a very serious reader, but as someone who reads a lot, it was a little bit of a let-down. It seemed sort of... outrageous. The ending, however, was perfect. Loved it. If you want to read a heartbreak, this is it. Quick read.
I find it hard to review this one. I liked the book, and I cried while reading. So there was an emotional attachment, but it just wasn't an unforgettable book for me. It was kind of like fodder - just there to pass the time. I hate to say that about it, because I did enjoy it. I just missed something with this one. Savannah was so caring and had such a big heart, but she also knew she had to take care of her heart and wouldn't let herself get hurt. I'm a Sparks fan, so yes, I'm biased and yes I loved everything about the story from the setting to the main characters to the ending even though it made me wince. I felt Sparks communicated the struggles a soldier endures not only before, during, and after war, but the internal struggle to exist between two very different worlds, one abroad and in combat and the other "at home." This very real struggle is what propels the story and it grabbed me at the jugular from the very first page. There are no political statements here and I loved that too. Sparks was true to himself as a writer and kept to what he knows and does best, the study of the journey of human frailty as our relationships are subjected to things larger than ourselves.
While the book was little slow-moving from time to time (I found myself skipping thru some of it), the last 3rd of the book was a real tear-jerker. Very moving, although I question the way the hero and heroine acted in some situations.
I loved, loved, loved this book. I love all of John Sparks' books. What a great author. I recommend this book to EVERYONE!!! I read it in one day...
Found this book to be a very sweet yet tragic love story. Cried at the end and wish it had ended differently but it's true to Nicholas Sparks fashion.
I loved this book for so many different reasons. I've read almost all Nicholas Sparks novels and I either love them or hate them. I think this one is so moving because it follows life closely. Rarely does my life reflect those novels where guy gets the girl and everything is hunky dory. This one showcases the bittersweet aspects of love, duty, family, and choice. It's real, emotional, and worth reading.

My favorite by Nicholas Sparks. I teared up several times while reading it. I could write a HUGE review about this book but then it would ruin it. All I can say is read this book! BTW I saw the movie this weekend. It was wonderful too. It didn't stick to the exact story of the book but what book to movie tie in really does?
Amazing book! This one and "A bend in the road" are by far my two favorites. Dear John is a great story, anyone would love this book. And also I recommend reading the book before seeing the movie. :) The movie sticks pretty close to the book though.. so I was happy bout that!
I am normally not a very big Nicholas Sparks fan, but this book actually was one of his better ones that I have read. I finished it within a couple of days, and while I had it almost figured out fairly quickly (plus the title nearly gives away part of the story line in of itself), I felt that the writing was better than most of Sparks' books. Many reviews were negative towards this one, and typically I feel negatively towards his books myself. However, this one gave a taste of what Sparks can do if he tries hard enough.
It goes without saying that Nicholas Sparks is one of today's "master" storytellers and he does not disappoint with Dear John. I loved it. The love that John and Savannah shared was written in a way that made me feel as if I was part of it all. I laughed, I smiled, I cried. I felt everything that the characters were feeling, as if I was on the journey with them. The ending in the book is different than the movie. I preferred the movie ending but hell...I'm a sucker like that.

I really enjoyed reading this book. I read "The Notebook" also. Both are at the top of my list of Nicholas Sparks.
I really loved this book, mainly because of the fact that it was something that was believable and happens in everyday life. It wasn't sugarcoated. I couldn't put the book down, it was definitely a page turner! Very easy read. One of my first Sparks' books and I plan on reading many more of his after this one.

The semi-tragic end was completely predictable, but Sparks manages (barely in some places) to handle it deftly without crossing the line into corny. I liked the way the characters developed and still stayed true to themselves, without the feel of being manipulated by the author. This is a typical boy meets girl love story with current events like 9/11. It's a tragedy and even the prologue will tell you that it does not end well. It is from the view of the protagonist, John. Even though the army is a large part of his life, he only mentions it in general and talks about 9/11 and Iraq briefly. I enjoyed reading it but gave it 4 stars only because I'm sap for tragedies. It's a well polished story line but pretty typical.
Can't say I liked the ending, but we know life doesn't always have happy endings. Good book though, and clean!

I was so drawn into this love story that I couldn't put the book down. Have a box of kleenex ready it's an emotional roller coaster. I would read another book by this author especially if more of John's life is revealed.

I did not really like this book and found the main character almost unlikeable until the very end of the book. I never understood why Savannah fell in love with John to begin with. As usual, the story is depressing and heartbreaking, but sorely missing the Sparks "spark" of romance.

This was a great love at first sight story. It really grasped the concept that when you meet 'the one', something inside of you just shifts as if the universe is trying to tell you not to mess this up. It had me tearing up, because things like this really do happen. How many people are in the service who are either in love already or fall in love while on leave, to then have to leave that person behind for the sake of their country? All your hopes and dreams are leaning on that love you have waiting back home, but you never know if it will last, because time and distance break the bond that seemed unbreakable. John and Savannah depicted the strength real life couples must have to sustain such strains, and in the end they depict how hard it is love someone you will never fully be with. GREAT READ! In the end, my heart hurt for John and Savannah.
Nicholas Sparks hasn't ventured outside his comfort zone in Dear John. Those who've read A Walk to November and The Notebook will find themselves in familiar territory with this tale of a reformed young rebel who falls in love with a fresh, kindhearted girl entirely outside his previous realm of experience. Formulaic? Yes, but I forgive him, mostly. John is a likable, straightforward narrator and, better yet, at the book's opening, he has already moved past the I'm-so-cool-cuz-I-don't-give-a-darn teenage immaturity that make A Walk to Remember slightly tedious in its early pages. Savannah is the kind of girl every mother hopes her son will bring home - genuine, selfless, mature yet innocent. Their falling in love is predictable, but nonetheless touching, and the best part of the book.

I LOVED this book! I read it in 2 days! It wasn't your typical Nicholas Sparks novel, but I think that is what I loved most about it.

While I normally like books of this type and by this author, I did not enjoy reading this book. I did learn a little about Asperger's Syndrome and felt honor-bound to finish it, but was left unsatisfied even at the end.

This was a sweet, sweet love story in the typical Sparks style.
I read this book about 2 weeks ago and still just cannot decide if how it ended was how I hoped it would end... Regardless, the ending is rather heart-wrenching (typical of Nicholas Sparks books.) The first quarter of the book is a little slow, but once the 2 main characters get together, things pick up. The book has other typical Sparks elements like intense romance, yearning, declarations of love, soul mates, etc., but that's part of what makes it such a sweet, endearing romance story... The movie version of the book is coming out on Feb. 5, so I would definitely recommend it to anyone who's going to see the movie!

I still can't get over how well Nicholas Spark writes such detailed romance novels - he gets right down to the nitty gritty on a persons feelings. This was such a touching story and a very emotional one - the endings aren't what you think they might be in a romance novel, he ends them more like the movie 'Braveheart' in some respects. I just loved this book and was so moved at the end that I couldn't stop crying and did like the way he did end it, but would have rather had it a different way. Oh well - still a great book! :p

I loved this book! While it was not a happy ending, I still loved it. It shows that true love is thinking whats best for that other person. There were sad moments. Lots of them. When you read this book, have a box of tissue nearby. Another great book from him. I just wish the movie would have a good ending. Im crossing my finger. :)

A predictable Nicholas Sparks read - not horrible, not amazing either. It's a nice, easy book that's great for escaping - just don't expect it to change your life or anything. Oddly enough, I think Nicholas Sparks's stories make better movies than books. The mundane details just don't do much for me as a reader. I just don't find enough depth in his books to keep me interested and this one was the same way. I was happy to see that the theatrical ending was slightly different than the book's, but I think this was not one of his better ones all the way around. There are much better stories out there so while Dear John is "ok" I certainly wouldn't recommend it.

As always, love Nicholas Sparks. This book read a lot like the Notebook though, that was disappointed. Plus I didn't tear up, something I always do with one of his books. Still very enjoyable though

I enjoyed this book. I liked the charactes and the story. It was a quick, easy read that I would recommend for anyone who likes a good love story.
I am usually not impressed with fairy tale love stories that Nicholas Sparks loves to write so much, but Dear John is so much more than just a simple love story. He writes about the difficulties of being away from home and joining the army, and a broken relationship between a father and his son, what to many of us is not just a fairy tale. This book hits close to home, and the plot is not just centered around a love story. It's so much more.
Another Sparks triumph. The way he conveys emotions so clearly really speaks to the reader directly. Be sure to have a box of tissues with you however to read this one!
OMG this book is simply AMAZING!!!! I loved every moment of it!!!! I didn't want it to end, and even though I absolutely HATED the ending, I knew that that was how the book was supposed to end. Seriously, one of the best Nicholas Sparks' books I've read!

Enjoyed reading this book. Of course, since the name was Dear John, I expected it to be a tear jerker but it wasn't - just a couple of places that called for tissues.
