When Priscilla Halburton-Smythe brings her London playwright fiance home to Lochdubh, everybody in town is delighted...except for love-smitten Constable Hamish Macbeth. Yet his affairs of the heart will have to wait. Vile, borrish Captain Bartlett, one of the guests at Priscilla's engagement party has just been found murdered--shot while on a grouse hunt. Now with many titled party guests as the prime suspects, each with a reason for snuffing out the despicable captain, Hamish must smooth ruffled feathers as he investigates the case. When the hidden culprit strikes again, Hamish will find himself trying to save Priscilla from a miserable marriage--and catch a killer before he flies the coop.

This is the first book in the series M. C. Beaton has written about her character Hamish Macbeth. The series is set in Scotland where Hamish is the local bobby. Great fun to read. I shall read more in this series.

It is very bad manners to be murdered on a grouse hunt, especially after you have upset everyone by being a boor at the engagement party. Thankfully, Hamish Macbeth has all the moves to settle ruffled feathers, find a murderer and maybe even woo the newly engaged lady away from her intended.
Second in the series.
Murder at Tommel Castle. Hamish must deal with the case and the fact that the love of his life is engaged to another.

Another great Hamish Macbeth "whodunit" from M. C. Beaton; she never disappoints.
M.C. Beaton is one of my favorite authors including the Agatha Raisin series. Hamish MacBeth is at it again in this book along with all of the quirky countryside
characters. I loved it.

Set in northern Scotland and he really is a Cad.
(From back cover) When priscilla halburton-Smythe brings her London playwright fiance home to Lochdubh, the whole town is delighted, save perhaps for love-smitten bobby Hamish Macbeth. But the morning after a tastefully posh engagement party, one of the guests, Captain Bartlett - who so enraged everyone with his boorish behavior and caddish comments - has the bad manners to be murdered on a grouse hunt.
Unfortunately, the prime suspects are the titled party guests, each with a decidedly unfriendly feeling toward the newly deceased. and a second shocking murder really is the last straw. Though alibis abound, it takes Hamish Macbeth, the quiet law enforcement genius, to smooth ruffled feathers and track a clever murderer, even as he subtly woos lovely Priscilla from her jealous city sophisticate.
