Lisa C. (tarheelcoin) reviewed Death Most Definite (Steven de Selby, Bk 1) on + 84 more book reviews
The terminology in this book was a bit confusing and the writing was on the choppy side. I've read better.
Grim Reapers in Austrailia meets Zombies slash love story slash action flick, add blood, gore, and Death himself. In all honesty, this story line would make a pretty cool movie if someone got ahold of it.
Terminology:
Pomper: Grim Reaper equivilent. Humans that work for Mr D. (Death himself) and are conduits for sending dead souls into the underworld.
a pomp: a soul needing to be or sent back to the underworld.
to pomp: the act of sending the soul back.
Still with me? Ok lets continue
Stirrer: a long dead soul determined to return to life and inhibits a dead body AKA the zombies
Number 4: The office building where the pompers report to
Death: This would be the big man in charge of the underworld, kind of like a corporate CEO. The main "Death" or Mr D. is the Austrailian RM
RM: Regional Manager. there are 13 of these. In other words there are 13 "Deaths" working all over the world.
Schism: Plot or act to take over power
Now that we have THAT out of the way, lets get onto the review. I enjoyed this book. It was a real page turner. Once I got past all the strange terminology I was really able to enjoy it.
Steven is a pomper who has a pretty rough time. He wakes up with a hangover and all of his fellow pomper employees are turning up dead. One of them being Lissa (which whom he falls for but hey, shes already dead.) After his house and dog get blown up, his parents killed, stirers running about the city, hes determined to get to the bottom of the mystery. He must travel to the underworld and face the ultimate showdown and struggle for power.
This book had a ton of action, lots of blood and killing. I appreciated the use of mythology where we meet Charon, however the underworld scenes were a bit choppy at times. Im excited to find out how Steven does in the next book.
