I was hooked on M.M. Kaye after reading her "The Far Pavilions." Her mysteries are also very good. I dare you to guess who the killer is in this one.
And, based on my other readings as well as memories of the news when I was young---yes, I'm that old---it's also an excellent description of the life style of British colonists in Africa, before those countries became independent.

An old book, but the mystery still holds. I gave it to my husband who wondered why I'd given him a "romance" but eventually he got through the introduction and enjoyed the story as well. I guess it is a valid look at life for white folks in the Rift Valley, but it's really hard to imagine such a lifestyle today.
