Over the years, I've read several Agatha Christie novels but by no means have I come close to reading her entire output. I read quite a lot of her back in the 70s and 80s but since then I have only read her very sparsely. Death on the Nile is one of her most popular writings and I'm glad I finally got around to reading it. I thought this was one of the best of the Poirot novels in which he faces a real challenge in solving the case. Linnet Ridgeway is a glamorous heiress worth millions. Her best friend, Jackie, arrives at her estate with the news that she is engaged to a charming but broke man named Simon Doyle. Linnet takes a liking to Doyle and is able to woo him and make him her husband, much to the chagrin of Jackie. They decide to honeymoon in Egypt where they meet Poirot along with a number of other characters including Linnet's trust manager and Jackie who has followed the couple to Egypt. Jackie swears vengeance on Linnet and Simon and during a scuffle shoots Simon in the leg. Then Linnet is found shot to death while she was sleeping. So can Poirot figure out who did it? Jackie appears to have an alibi but there are others that may have a motive to kill Linnet. Poirot of course is able to wade through the clues and misdirections to solve this very convoluted case.

I really enjoyed this one as I usually do with most of Christie's novels. I was able to come up with the right suspect but I wasn't sure how the crime was pulled off. I really need to read more of Christie and hopefully I will sometime soon. There is also a recent movie version of this novel starring Kenneth Branagh as Poirot and Gal Gadot as Linnet. Although the movie hasn't received the best reviews, it is available on HBO so I'll be watching it soon.

I enjoyed the character building in this one as much as the suspense and mystery in the story.

Hercule Poirot investigates a triple murder that takes place on a ship taking a tourist trip up the Nile. The murder of an heiress, one of the richest women in Europe, is only the top of the iceberg of intrigue and secrets that obscure the truth and lead to more deaths.

I think that Agatha Christie was at her best when it came to writing novels. Short stories didn't give her as much room to develop the plot and characters in that special subtle way of hers. I particularly liked this story because on the surface it is a mystery but underneath it all it is really a study in human character, the different types and manifestations of love and the role it plays in the lives of people.

The story was first published in 1938, but it is still a very good story. Agatha Christie was expert in creating lots of suspects and then surprising you with someone quite different.

This is my favorite Agatha Christie novel. Not as well known as And Then There Were None, but I though it was a more effective mystery. Unforgettable characters. I had a lot of fun reading this one.

I love this book!! So much intrique and suspense running amuck on the train is wonderful. The characters and the hidden secrets they all have is so fun to see come about in the deaths that happen. Great who dun it!

Poirot, who is always seasick and airsick, takes a boat trip to the Nile River. Why?, you say: because one of the voyagers will be murdered, of course. He must be on hand to puzzle-out and to outwit the culprit in his own inimitably fashion. Would you expect local enforcement to be capable? Hardly! They rarely are in detective literature. It is always the sleuth who is competent. And solve it he does.

A Hercule Poirot mystery, set on a cruise ship on the Nile, in Egypt. A period piece.

This classic Christie takes place aboard a Nile steamer, where the famous Belgian detective Hercule Poirot meets an alluring woman. Young, beautiful, stylish, rich, she even has a loving husband. Then tragedy strikes when she is shot through the head. With customary panache, Poirot probes the airtight alibis until he brilliantly bursts open the case.
