Scottish setting, an attractive main character, and a perplexing murder. Good, quick read that holds your attention all the way through.

Beaton's Hamish Macbeth is always delightful. His slow rhythms, friendly bending of the law and keen mind make for very entertaining mysteries.

Sixth in the Hamish MacBeth cozy Scottish police procedural series, in which Hamish, bereft of plans for the Christmas holiday, takes up the invite of a friend of Priscilla's and joins her at her health farm on a lonely island to investigate whether or not someone is trying to kill her. Someone DOES die, but it's not Jane--it's Heather, one of her houseguests. Was Heather murdered because she was Heather or because someone thought she was Jane? Supt. Blair writes off the murder as an accident but Hamish knows better and eventually gets his man. As usual, a quick, light and enjoyable read.

The sixth book in the series.
Hamish takes a holiday right before Christmas to a health farm.
Did one of the other guests do it, or one of the unfriendly villagers?

This mystery take place over the Christmas holidays. But dont expect too much christmas cheer from this read. Jealousy, lust, envy and Murder are the sentiments of the season in Hamish Macbeths 6th outing, Death of Snob. While some of the characters in this book are a little cookie-cutter M.C. Beaton has her off-beat detective Hamish down pat. This is only my second Hamish Macbeth book to read but already Hamish comes across as a good old friend. Beaton also does a great job capturing the geography, weather and people of the small Scottish Isle in which the mystery takes place. Regarding the Mystery itself. Its good but not great. Was a little disappointed when a key characteristic (i.e. Clue) of the murderer is revealed toward the end of the book. Would have been more convincing if this quality was established earlier on. Instead it comes across as being a bit contrived. But this shouldnt keep you from spending time with Hamish Macbeth. Its a fun and quick read.

This is the 6th book in the Hamish Macbeth series. Hamish is on Christmas Holiday at a Health Farm. He's helping the owner figure out who's trying to hurt her, but it's not the owner who is found murdered but a guest. With his compassionate doggedness and logical sleuthing skills, Hamish and lady friend work together to solve this mystery.

I like Hamish because he's kind and compassionate. He doesn't come with any baggage or dark past. He's content with his job as local police officer in Lochdubh, Scotland. Others find him lazy and unambitious, but he always stays true to himself.

One of a series of Hamish MacBeth novellas, this one stands out for its Christmas setting (in Scotland, of course). I'm not a big cozy series follower, but I was delighted to find one with this kind of wit. Hamish, the constable with the flaming red hair, is a believable character, with girl problems and boss problems, but with a concern for most of the oddball characters that make up his constituency. And he's an animal lover. I like Hamish and I have to make a quick visit to Lochdubh from time to time.
