This book didn't hold my interest like Sure Henry's other novels. It was fun to read about the reenactment of the Gold Rush though, and the characters (Jessie and Alex) are wonderful.

I've enjoyed some of this authors's books (Murder on the Ididarod, The End of the Road), but this one didn't make it. It was wordy, improbable and did not hold my interest. I guess if I were fascinated by gold rush stories, it would have been better.

The Spirit of '98, a small cruise ship, sets sail up the Inside Passage of Alaska to commemorate the Gold Rush of 1898. Alex Jensen and his girlfriend Jessie Arnold are aboard as official representatives of the State of Alaska.
Alex is looking forward to a leisurely cruise, but his police skills are called into play when some valuable items are stolen from several staterooms. Soon the problems compound when a dead body is found in the water and one of the crewmembers disappears.
In the meantime, 2 men have stolen a sailboat and later a powerboat to commit a crime which is unknown to them. Eventually the two story lines merge and the entire ship is threatened by a diabolical plot. Alex untangles the mystery and sets out to save the ship from imminent danger.

I love Sue Henry. She is one of my fav authors, Id like that known, foremost, to my fellow readers. "Death Takes Passage" is book four in the Jessie Arnold series.
In this adventure Jessie and Alex take an Alaskan cruise which explores the gold rush sagas of the area, as well as the wildlife in general and stories along the way of people in days gone by.
All is fun and fair until jewelry and other items come up missing from the cabins on the ship. Bodies start showing up. Cabin mates and crew start acting strange and thus the mystery is on, for Alex and Jessie.
The descriptions about the sea, the towns they visited, were so eloquently written. HOWEVER, I am really not sure what happened but I became so bored with the story and couldn't wait for it to end. Remember this is one of my fav authors....I did read the whole thing, I just found everything and everyone boring with the exception of those beautiful descriptions about the Alaskan wilderness.
It was like a breath of fresh air until the story started taking off again, then here came my yawning..I was glad to close the book for good.
