I just cleaned off my sons bookshelf of two series by James Axler.  Both take place after nuclear apocalypse.  I have read them and they are entertaining books.  These books can be read as stand alone or you can read from beginning to end of each series.  The main characters remain the same, the situations and the locations change for each book.
