The estate at Clouds Frome was architect Geoffrey Staddon's greatest achievement. It was also the site of his greatest dishonour - for it was there he met Consuela Caswell, the beautiful Brazilian wife of Clouds Frome's proprietor. He loved Consuela immediately, fiercely, recklessly. In return, she risked everything for him - until he betrayed her for his own ambitious dreams of glory.

Twelve years later, when Staddon learns that Consuela has been charged with the poisoning of her neice and the attempted murder of her husband, he knows he cannot forsake her again. He returns to Clouds Frome and to the dark secrets it has harbored for so long, only to discover a web of betrayals more complex than he had ever imagined. As the courts grind slowly toward Consuela's doom, Staddon must find the courage to risk everything he is to save her and to pay, finally his debt of dishonor.
