Alas, this is the last of Airth's "John Madden" novels. It looks like he stopped writing after releasing two books in 2020. According to his page at Fantastic Fiction he is still alive, but at 89 he probably wants to enjoy other things.
If you read his books, you know not to be deceived by what the characters are thinking. This book appeared to drag somewhat in the middle, but I eventually realized it was just Airth's way of confusing the reader. So I speculated about another idea, which seemed doubtful, but which turned out to be right. Still, an event at the end, which seemed to come out of nowhere, surprised me. That shouldn't have happened, as that seems to be a standard in Airth's plots.
