If you are looking for a treasure hunt with lots of action, this is it! This was my 1st book by Rollins and I'm excited to read more of his books. Twists and turns galore run through this book. It was a fast and very entertaining read.

Another fabulous read from this author, I am a die hard fan now! It's like Clive Cussler without the sometimes wry sense of humor, but tons more facts and action and great story lines mixed with historical facts and fiction. And always a little touch of romance thrown in without muddying up the story with it. Unlike Clive Cussler, we don't have the same hero in each book so we get a fresh start each time and no history of the characters to have to recall.Makes me want to go out exploring the locales he provides each time. I love this author.

The novel starts with a somewhat normal event: a solar eclipse, being viewed around the world. The reader sees the perspectives of several people, including a government operative. Much of the action, however, is going on below the surface of the ocean where Rollins's hero, Jack Kirkland, is attempting an underwater salvage mission. Solar flares from the eclipse have started a chain reaction of natural disasters including earthquakes and raging fires. Kirkland is asked to help rescue the president's plane which went down over the Pacific Ocean.
Rollins writes a rather intelligent thriller, where Kirkland faces not only the challenges of helming a salvage operation on the open ocean but a duplicitous former colleague who wants to see the world go to war as well as fighting the memory of his lost love. He's aided by an archaeologist, Karen, who may know what the mysterious formations are on the ocean floor that Kirkland's team runs into. Some of Rollins's books are silly but this one, along with Amazonia, cements him as a first-rate action writer.

The book was great but I didn't care for his descriptions of Chatan City, obviously he never went there and got his information for an outdated history book.

This the second book I've read by Rollins, I liked its plot. It starts off like a Clive Cussler adventure but has a Sci-Fi leaning to it. Though ( as you often read in the book review of others) the scientific implausibility may at times seem far-fetched, I rather appreciate that poetic licence.
I love James Rollins books! This has an unexpected ending, which I liked.
Due to the worldwide earthquakes, many impossibilities have surfaced...literally. There are many things happening around the world and all are connected. It is Jack Kirkland's duty to figure out the strange occurences and the seeming conspiracy of the plane crash.
Jack is an ex navy SEAL who has been off the charts for ten years when his vessel is called back to duty. Air Force One has crashed and the President is presumed dead. Jack's ship is needed in the Pacific Islands for salvage duty. He finds very strange things under the sea including hieroglyphics. His fiercest enemy, David Spangler is in charge of the military's investigation and will do whatever it takes to have revenge on Jack for his sisters death. The animosity between these two really provides some great conflict and fabulous storyline intertwined with the disaster, the coverup and the recovery efforts.
While exploring the Dragons, an island that surfaced due to the earthquakes, Karen and Miyuki are attacked and forced inside the pyramids. Strange hieroglyphics are discovered and after taking pictures they are forced to flee for their lives. Exhaustive internet searches connect them with Jack's ship and then the fun really begins.
James Rollins books always remind me of Dirk Pitt from Clive Cussler. This one was wonderful and totally unrealistic but fun nonetheless.

I love James Rollins books. However, this one had a really slow start for me. I hung in there and in the end it was really good.

I've become a big Rollins fan and this one did not disappoint me. That said, I think the hatred of David for Jack was extremely overblown. Every hero needs a nemesis, but the reasoning behind this almost defies belief.

good reading
While this story kept me reading, I'll have to say it wasn't as good a story as the other stories I've read by Mr. Rollins; i.e. "Map of Bones", "Black Order", "Sandstorm", or "Ice Hunt". That said, I do recommend this to anyone who likes a fast paced action/thriller story.
If your into water adventures this book will work for you. Though Other books his are better.
