I had looked forward to this one but it just seemed to drag along and I didn't get far in it before I finally gave up.

I love the author's Nan Vining series. Nan is a tough as nails detective who is fighting her own demons left over from a brutal attack a couple of years before. On a routine call she was ambushed and left for dead. In fact, she flatlined for two minutes before emergency personnel brought her back. Now she's determined to find the man who did it to her. She has a solid lead. Another policewoman was killed in a surprise attack, which on the surface might not seem to be connected to Nan' s case. However, Nan discovers that this other woman, shortly before her death, was involved in a widely publicized incident AND received a necklace from an anonymous person similar to the one Nan received after she shot a well-known rock star. Also a highly publicized incident. Both necklaces had a gem, the birthstone of the months they were attacked and both were accompanied by a note congratulating them.

This is information Nan has kept to herself. She didn't reveal it to the police, nor to her partner, Jim Kissick, who is also her lover. She's afraid if she does she will lose control of her own private investigation, which she sees as necessary to her own mental well being.

In this particular book, Nan and Jim are called to a crime scene which they begin working together as usual. Then a new lead surfaces in Nan' s stabbing so their supervisor orders Jim to look into it, leaving Nan to run their current case. It's then Nan realizes she has to come clean with Jim, confess what she's done, and hope her actions don't get her fired, or even worse, cause her to lose Jim.

This was a riveting thriller, one I didn't want to put down. The books keep getting better as I go along. It's the characters I find so intriguing. While the plots are good, it's Nan and Jim that keep me coming back for more. Would definitely recommend.
