This was a middle of the road book for me. It was good....but not great. Once I got over my initial curiosity and interest in Nyx, she kind of lost some of her sparkle and became a bit predictable. I found Olivia and Torin much more interesting characters and would probably only read the sequels if they played more prominent roles.

I'm so glad I read the second book, "No Werewolves Allowed," first. That one was so much better. If I read this one first, I would have never continued with the series.
The writing here is very jumbled and confusing. Things don't move very smoothly. It's almost like McCray wanted to write a few scenes and then just stuck them together. There is also a lot of people and things to keep track off since this is the first book.
The characters were not well developed. As a result it was hard to connect with Nyx or anyone else. A lot of information were repeated.
Trust me. The second book is so much better and I completely fell in love with Nyx and Olivia there. Plus Adam is hunkier in that one. I have to say the second book have more obnoxious characters but at least they have personalities.
I plan to read the third one which will decide if I will continue with this series.

This book was annoying. After 50 pages I gave up. UF? I think not. There are too many good books out there to waste my time with stinkers.

Maybe I'm in the wrong frame of mind. Maybe this author's style doesn't appeal to me. Not sure what it is but 20 pages in I can tell I'm not going to like any character in this book. Too many good books out there waiting for me to waste time on something I know I won't like. It feels about as deep as a puddle and believe me I don't ask for much.....Maybe I'll try again some other day.
A fast read. Very engaging. I liked all the characters especially Nyx sidekick Olivia and her T-shirts. The ending sets you up for a sequel, but I'd have like more of a resolution. I also would've liked Nyx to grow up a bit. She's 27 and at times acts like 17. But overall, fun.

Nyx Ciar is half human/half dark elf who nightly changes into her elf-self, purple skinned (oh I'm sorry Amethyst) with blue hair and as a Tracker, finds and kills demons. During the day she is a private investigator who has a terrible crush on Adam Boyd, NYPD detective whom she works with solving crimes. Something demonish is killing Trackers and kidnapping paranorm liaisons (cops) and Nyx is determined to find this demon and destroy it before another of her friends is gruesomely murdered.
This is a very involved world set in NYC with lots of Trackers, setting up for a long series, I hope. In addition to the many Trackers, we have Nyx's PI partner Olivia (also a bad-ass who likes vampires), Rodan (her boss and sometimes lover) and Torin (an enigma who may or may not be on their side.) I was caught from the first chapter by Nyx and Olivia. There is definitely enough going on to keep anyone interested and glued to the pages.

I have to admit- when I started this book, I didn't think I was going to end up liking it. The beginning of the book was very jumbled, and I really couldn't "connect" with the main character "Nyx". She seemed very selfish and spoiled. There wasn't enough "back-story" to really understand what was going on in the story, and I felt there was a lot of unneccesary name dropping of designer products. (Also the term of "Xphone" instead of "Iphone" was silly and annoying.)
I almost gave up on the book, but for some reason, about 2/3 of the way through, I found myself beginning to like Nyx a bit. The author finally gives us a little bit of insight into her character, and we actually see some real emotion from her. The action in the story really began to pick up at this point too, although the final battle scene with the demons left me with the strange feeling that I was watching "Ghostbusters 2" for some reason.
Did I love this book? No. Did I hate it? No. Would I read the sequel? I think I will... (Especially since I've already got it!) I have just enough interest in what happens between Nyx and her two beaus that it'll keep me reading for at least one more installment. Maybe book 2 will be a little easier to read, since I no longer dislike the heroine as much... We'll see...

I enjoyed this book, looking forward to reading the second night tracker.
