Historical novel of the Royal Navy set in the eighteenth century. The improbability of reality nearly over rides the fiction.
My husband says it was great--as are all of O'Brian's book.
Great series!
Great fun, riveting. Had to read all the O'Brian books
While the first 4 books in "the Cannon" are written as squeals to one another, each book's story resolving by its respective end, Desolation Island is the first of what is considered a trilogy inside the wider series (Desolation Island, the Fortune of War and the Surgeon Mate).
his writer is fantastic with the nautical "stuff" and this book is no exception.
You need to treat this series of books as one big book, the action flows from one to another.
A slight deviation from the other books, in that they must "shelter" on an island for repairs. The author through Maturin shows us the wealth of animal life.

I liked this nautical adventure featuring Captain Jack Aubrey and Dr. Stephen Maturin. There were lots of edge-of-the seat moments as the Leopard had to flee the Dutch ship and later find a place to land for repairs. I look forward to reading the next book in the series, The Fortune of War.
