Fantastic account of the fascinating, if grim, story of the Donner Party's journey west. The book was totally engrossing and Rarick neither glosses over nor sensationalizes the cannibalism aspect. Well researched. I would highly recommend this for anyone interested in the subject, or history in general.

This is the most interesting book about a historical event that I have ever read. It's non-fiction, but reads like a novel. I could not put it down.

This book was very well written. I almost always read fiction, but the Donner Party interests me, and this reads closer to a novel than typical non-fiction. That being said, this book was extremely difficult to get through. It is not for the weak at heart or stomach. It is so well written that I felt hopeless and unhappy when I read it, because Rarick describes things so vividly, he makes you feel like you're there. I recommend this book highly, but be prepared to feel desperate, especially knowing people really had to go through this devastating ordeal.

Well researched and not over done with tiny details. Author did a fair job on telling the story without making out anyone be something they were not. It was not a easy read due to subject but it was a quick read for me because I just could not put it down.
