a well-written thriller that is a step up from the basic beach read. the main character is an alcoholic down-and-out detective. He isn't exactly a glamour hero, but unassuming Bennie systematically carries on, he makes mistakes, he stumbles back into alcohol while under stress but at the end of the day he delivers.
He is also taken in and fooled by a character in the story.
