I enjoyed the first three (two?) books. When the mysticism of Dexter's dark passenger was introduced, I wasn't really on board with the story anymore. I felt like it somehow veered off the cliff from believable into What just happened? My husband felt the same way. Now, this had nothing to do with the television show. I don't watch it, so I can not compare it to whatever was happening there, but I felt like perhaps Lindsay was trying to differentiate the character so much from the Showtime one that it went a little off.

This novel was less mythical, but Dexter has turned into a weak character that is too distracted to really do anything. What happened to the drive and dedication to justice? A pretty young actress comes into town and all of a sudden all of Dexter's brain cells die?

Summary:
Dexter and Deborah are put on assignment to be experts on a movie set. The actress playing the lead in the movie ends up with a stalker. Somehow Dexter is assigned to become her bodyguard and develops feelings for her. Even though Dexter stalks the killer a little bit, he seems to be totally absorbed with the actress that nothing happens. Literally, nothing happens. In the mean time, Rita, Astor, and Cody attempt to get Dexter's attention a lot.

My thoughts:
Other than what I stated above, I feel like it was a mistake to have picked up another Dexter book. Even receiving the book for free did not make this worthwhile. Finally, why would Dexter become a bodyguard? He's a blood analyst. Although I realize that he is physically fit, he is not a typical police officer. I can not actually figure out a reason that a professional wouldn't be assigned to the actress over Dexter. This makes no sense. The only good part is that there was no supernatural aspect to the story.

This was very entertaining but not up to the power and exactness of the Dexter we have grown to love from the earlier books. He has turned into a self-indulgent whiner who is unhappy with his married-with-children- life. His "code" has slipped also. A little disappointed, but all in all, good writing and it's entertaining, if you don't expect the "old" Dexter...
