Darlene Drummond watches her mother die from complications from heart disease and diabetes, the same illnesses which have plagued her family for generations, and decides to take her fate into her own hands. She will get healthy, no matter what it takes. The African American university professor embarks on a personal journey that leads her to weight loss surgery, rare for African American women at the time she had it done. She is not only concerned for her own health, but for the health of her people, and is saddened to remember how so many of her loved ones have fell into an early grave because of preventable disease.

Ms. Drummond is brutally honest in her diary, which contains lively descriptions of her most private experiences and emotions. I really enjoyed the book and I learned some things, too!
