This is a taut thriller with lots of twists and flashbacks.  Normally, I don't like flashbacks because they seem to stop the action.  However, the author used the looks back to explain the character's motivation or help the reader understand the significance of the previous chapter.

I was caught up with Solomon Gray's life almost immediately.  He is haunted by the loss of his son, Tom, at a fair ride ten years ago.  From that point on, his life has careened out of control.  The only thing he has left is his job.  Fortunately, Sol is good at his work.  But horrible things keep happening...

It was a shock to see how depressed Sol was.  Most detectives are a bit more upbeat than Mr. Gray.  However, his disposition was appropriate for the trauma that has been following him for the past 10 years.  The fact that he spends all of his extra time searching for some clue to his son's disappearance, shows the reader that Sol is dedicated and steadfast.

Bear with the British language; it takes a bit to understand what he is saying.  I found the author's writing style to be very interesting and different.  I look forward to reading more of this author's books.
