From the inside flap of the dust jacket...

One of the men lay face down on the floor. a gun near his hand. The other was sitting with his back to the wall, and a bullet hole between his eyes.

That is how Enid Vance, a young and attractive free-lance secretary, finds the old men one bright May morning. One of them was her employer, Homer Lenox, whose has been writing a history of local families in Van Brunt, New York: the other is the local librarian. Had they somehow manage to shoot each other? Or is it murder-suicide?
