I read this one a couple of years ago and the ending still haunts me. Might be one of the best books I have ever read. I could not put it down.
Helpful Score: 6
What the outside of the book doesn't tell you is that the underlying plot of this story includes a theme about Satanism. The first time I encountered it I found it unnerving and a little disturbing. So if that theme would be too much for you then you should not read. BUT the story and storyline was well written and developed and a real page turner. I had a hard time putting it down.

This one should NOT be listed as a Romance - it should be listed as a Thriller!! There were times that I thought about not finishing it as it really was scary - but couldn't lay it down. Definitely a 'good read'!

OH MY! Dark and sinister--real page turner

A powerful tale of passion, murder and small-town scandal. In this classic novel, a woman returns to the home she left behind, to a past that is waiting to kill her. You won't want to lay this one down.

Surprisingly good, but dark and intense. Quite interesting (and frightening)information about satanic cults that I had never heard.

It's about an artist that goes back home to her haunted past and her father's suicide. I won't ruin it, but it's a great read!

I am in the middle of re-reading this book. The first time being the many years ago that I read it,when it first was released. I am enjoying it as much now as I did then. Earlier Nora Roberts is the best. So,yes.I highly recommend this read.

Clare Kimball fled her small town and took the art world by storm. Now, she needs to go back and face the demons she tried to leave behind. Typical Roberts, full of suspense, colorful characters and romance.

One of Nora's better ones. Gripping...could not put it down.
A woman is threatened by a coven of Satanists in this work of romantic suspense by the popular and prolific Nora Roberts. Ever since she was a little girl, Clare has been tormented by dreams in which she witnesses her father participating in a Satanic ritual. Now a successful sculptor living in New York, she returns to her hometown in Emmitsboro, Maryland, to confront the source of those dreams--and the truth of her father's mysterious death. With the help of the sexy local sheriff, Cameron Rafferty, Clare looks for answers...only to discover that her dream was no dream, but a memory.

Really good read. Suspense. A little on the dark side, but I loved it.
This is a great book. Kept me on the edge of my seat for the whole thing.
good mystery...great love story
Small town girl becomes a celebrated artist and moves back home to face the demons of her past. A sinister murder is linked to her return and together she and the sheriff (who has loved her from afar since high school), they investigate and learn that evil can linger anywhere, even in those you love and trust the most.
If you don't already think so, this book will convince you that small towns have dark underbelly.
A decade ago, sculptor Clare Kimball fled Emmitsboro, Maryland, to take the art world by storm. Now she's celebrated as the artist of her generation. But no amount of success can eclipse the nightmares that haunt her - or the memories of her father's suicide. Just as her star is shinning brighter than ever, Clare leaves it all behind to face her demons. Emmitsboro sheriff Cameron Rafferty loved Clare from afar all through high school. Now that she's is back, they form a bond that grows stronger each day - fueled by an attraction that's been simmering for years. But Clare's past soon rises up with a vengeance, rocking the town with a sinister murder that is clearly linked to her return. As an investigation gets under way, Clare and Cameron will learn that evil can linger anywhere - even in those you love and trust the most. But it's a discovery that may come too late to save them. . . If you like Nora Roberts, you will like this book! Lots of twist and turns!
A cute and tragic heroine, a handsome and tragic hero, a small town, satanism, sacrifices, and mystery throughout. What could be better?
Nora Robert's delivers another mystery tinged drama complete with a satanic clan. An interesting read, but not one of her better books.
Clare Kimball is a talented and famous sculptor who is trying to leave her past behind. She grew up in the small town of Emmitsboro, Maryland, which on the surface seems an idylic place to raise a family. Clare has been haunted by nightmares since her father committed suicide under mysterious circumstances. Her art begins to reflect the darkness in her dreams, and she finds herself back in Emmitsboro digging for the truth of her family, her past, and her hometown and the evil that lurks behind some of the faces that are most familiar to her.
As always, a great Nora Robers Book. Enjoy!!
When Clare returns to her hometown, and tries to uncover the truth of her fathers death, she learns that evil can be anywhere-- even in those you love! A good thriller! This novel is "darker" than the authors usual work, and one of her best!
WORTH TAKING YOUR TIME TO READ. I WAS NOT PREPARED FOR THE ENDING. WOW!
good Nora Roberts book, easy read
Clare Kimball is a succesful sculptor living in a SOHO loft and representated by a major NY art gallery. But something is missing and she decides to move back to her home town to face down the problems she thought she'd left behind. What she finds is a passionate love with an old friend, who's now sheriff of the town and a mysterious connection to a satan worshiping cult. This is a suspenseful and wonderful story.
Divine evil is all about a brillant artist with a troubled past who goes home to resolve the past. i really enjoyed it
A little darker than her normal fare but still enjoyable.

I love Nora Robert's mysteries. This is a good one.
Very good although it was about Satanism so parts were pretty graphic. It kept me engrossed thru-out though.
Really enjoyed this.
This was a great book. It's a little different from what she usually writes, but I couldn't put it down.
FROM THE PUBLISHER
With blowtorch and steel Clare Kimball has sculpted a personal vision that commands the attention of the New York art world. But success can not burn away the vague, troubling memories, the half-remembered nightmares that have plagued Clare since childhood. These phantoms of the past have drawn her home to Maryland, to the small town where she grew up and where her father died in circumstances never really explained.
Emmitsboro is just as Clare remembered - the same familiar faces, the same chatty gossip passed over the counter at the local diner. Nothing much has changed - except Cameron Rafferty. Once the high school bad boy, he landed on the right side of the law and is now the town sheriff. The only clue to his wild, passionate nature is the light in his eyes when he looks at Clare. In Cam's strong arms Clare is seduced into falling in love. And into believing her small-town world is safe.
But within the dark woods of Emmitsboro something evil spreads its poisonous power. Now the once-peaceful town is wrapped in a cloak of terror, hiding a teacherous heart. And now Clare must pay the price for digging up the secrets of the past. . . and confront an evil that may be unstoppable because those who practice it may be divine.

A little creepier than I usually like, but still enjoyable. Enjoyed reading near Halloween!
New to reading Nora Roberts. Enjoy her twists and turns in her stories. Good read.
I loved this book. I couldn't wait to read on to see what was going to happen. Details are a bit gory, but otherwise a great book.
Good book! Deals with a small town with its own hidden devil cult. Will good prevail? Its Nora Roberts!
This one keeps you hopping. It has some devil worshipping in it by the bad guys of course but nothing offensive.
OK story line. I almost stopped reading it, but then stayed with it just to confirm who the members of the group were.
Not her best work, but tolerable.

This book was so intense! It was crazy to think people can be so overcome with evil. well written, kept me turning the pages!!
Good book. Just not my usual style.
This was a great book. One of Nora Roberts best. It kept me guessing right up to the end. I could not put this book down.
Great story -- even second time around.

As always Nora Roberts once again comes through with another excellent romantic suspense novel.
Enjoyed the book except the ending was weak
A powerful tale of passion, murder and small town scandal. In this classic novel, a woman returns to the home she left behind, to a past that is waiting to kill her.
Pretty intriguing book, but not for those with a weak stomach!
Quite disturbing at times...tho I had a very hard time putting this book down.
A powerful tale of passion, murder and small town scandal

Murder, scandal, a haunting past, an old flame rekindled, this book has it all. A real page turner! Edge of your seat thrill ride!
Murder and small town scandal
Exellent story with mystery, thriller and romance all mixed in.
Small town scandal at Nora Roberts best. Evil can linger anywhere-even those you love and trust the most. Compelling good read.
One of Nora Roberts best books. I loved it!!!
Great book, Clare returns to her hometown of Emmitsbore, Maryland after l0 years, She is now a famous sulpter, she feels the urge to return home and confront the nightmare she has continued to have since her father committed suicide. She witnessed a satanic ritual as a girl and she has been having the nightmare because she blocked it out and she is ready to confront it. She also has a relationship with the town sherriff and her brothers best friend while she is there.
Very Different for Roberts; very dark, but a page turner.
Could NOT put this down. A very good read.
Good story
Good book -quite different
Wow, what a story line. I couldn't put it down. Had to find out "what happens next".
I loved this book! One of my favorites by Nora Roberts!
Anyone who loves a good book about fiction and the occult, witchcraft and romance, this is a must read!
A powerful tale of passion, murder and small town scandal. a women returns to the home she left behind to a past that is waiting to kill her. Very good read
I love Nora Roberts, but this is a departure for her. It is a story of a girl with memories of horror that she has blocked for years. It all comes back to her and she uncovers a murder and evil in a small town.
Dated, but suspensful. I love that Robert's thrillers you can't really truly fall in love with any characters other than hero and heroine, you never know who might have a secret in their past! This book truly surprised me, I hope it will you too.
I stopped reading Nora Roberts for a while because everything was the same, just different characters. This was a fantastic change of pace for her.
I usually have "everything" figured out before I reach the end of the book and this one I didn't.
GRAPHIC VIOLENCE AND SEX
GRAPHIC VIOLENCE AND SEX
Another good Nora Roberts even though the "bad guys" are very distrubing.
One of my favorite authors, she brings mystery as well as likeable characters to this story. In this book, she touches on areas we would rather hope really doesn't exist.
Art, mystery, mayhem!
If you like Nora Roberts you will love this book. Allow yourself lots of time because once you get into it...you will not be able to put it down.
This book may not be for everyone, it's got Satanists, child rape, murder, Satanic sacrifice, and enough plot twists to keep me guessing "who done it" until nearly the end of the book!
Super read!
Way too creepy to read alone at night.
This book gave me chills!! Excellent read!
Great book by Nora, romance and mystery.
Yet another captivating and suspenseful Roberts read!
First book I ever bought by this author, liked it so much I plan on reading more of her stuff.
Dislike the title very much, didn't follow my 5 step checklist before purchasing a book, but you might like this more than me... a sculptor, with memories of her father's suicide, faces her own demons; the sheriff, an old flame from high school; a sinister murder linked to her return.
One of my favorites by Nora Roberts..
Another one of Nora Robert's excellent books! This one was read in record breaking time!
Lots of suspense. Great book.
Fascinating book with a surprise ending (well at least to me it was) LOL
fantastic.
