One of the best detective/mystery series I have
ever read. Guido Brunetti and his Venice are so
real. I love his family and want to know more
about his work companions. His relationship with his with Paola is one of the most charming I have ever encountered in fiction. I am currently reading
through the series as if it were one big, fat
book. Each book is more engaging than the last.

Time spent reading a Guido Brunetti mystery is like falling into a trip to Venice, a delicious experience, one to be savored and enjoyed. To quote a review of Leon's writing, "the plot is silky and complex". This one is excellent.

an engaging mystery set in Venice: Leon's detective, Commissario Guido Brunetti, investigates the mystery of a very disagreeable old woman's death, in the meantime missing many delicious lunches prepared by his wife (the descriptions of the food will send you out to your nearest Italian restaurant--or inspire you to learn to cook Mediterranean food yourself!)

Ooops. That was Spanish. But translate that into Italian and you've got yourself a nice, easily readable and interesting mystery. This is my first Donna Leon book, and I think I'll be reading more of her.

A terrific novel of suspense that finds commisario Brunetti and his indispensable secretary, Signorina Elettra, navigating the murky waters of Venentian Society. Author Donna Leon takes readers to a Venice that tourists rarely see.

Commissario Guido Brunetti stories are some of the most delightful books available today. Guido and his family are reminders of life in a simpler time. It harkens back to a more leisurely time in America; I remember (all seven of us) sitting together for a meal and discussing things of the day with my parents. None of us would think of missing a family meal.

The reason for the story happened while Guido and family were on vacation in Ireland. A miserly old woman was bludgeoned to death in her home. She had a Romanian housekeeper (and personal slave) who was instantly declared the murderer when it was found that she had left the home with a large amount of money and boarded a train for home.

Unfortunately, when accosted by the police at a station close to the border, she ran across the tracks and was struck by a train. Three weeks after the case was closed, a neighbor comes to the police station and offers a very different story about the Romanian woman; Lt. Scarpa scoffs at her story and then sends her to Commissario Brunetti to get the truth from her.

As Brunetti investigates discretely (because neither his boss nor Lt. Scarpa want the case reopened). He finds that things are not as simple as the police surmised. The author isnt above describing the corruption in Italy people cheat on their taxes, government employees give lucrative contracts to friends/family, politicians are caught with their hands in the taxpayers till often.

Through all of this, Brunetti stays true to his moral compass and his pursuit of injustice and crimes. Paola, Guidos wife, always has her dander up about something; she is a perfect balance to Brunettis calm.
