This is a cute story about two doll houses and their occupants, one from 100 years ago, and the other modern and all plastic, with microwave, TV, and computer. It has cute black and white pictures and a mystery to be solved by the dolls. Learn, too, about "Doll State" and "Permanent Doll State" and why they exist.

This is a great book for kids both very young and old enough to be reading it on their own. I read it to my daughter and we both enjoyed ourselves (trust me that's not always the case with "girl" books for me). This was one that we talked about afterward and looked forward into diving into again. I have some very fond memories of reading time with my little girl and this book series was a big part of those memories. If you're looking for something like that, do yourself a favor pick this one up.

Besides the cute story, this is a gorgeous book, with front and back flaps and the drawings are by Brian Selznick; they make the book really stand out. Brian Selznick went on to write The Invention of Hugo Cabret, so fans of his will treasure this book.

Passed down from one generation to the next, the Doll family has lived in the same dollhouse, located in the same room of the Palmer family's house, for 100 years. Then the modern, plastic Funcraft family has moved into Kate's little sister's room. It is an interesting plot...dolls that move and are "real" when you leave the room. Didn't every little girl believe that at one time or another?

Annabelle Doll is eight years old--she has been for more than a hundred years. Not a lot has happened to her, cooped up in the dollhouse, with the same doll people, day after day, year after year, until one day the Funcrafts move in.

When everyone is gone and all is silent, the doll people come alive. The doll people go on adventures and discover other doll people living under the same roof of the owners of all the dolls.

A good fantasy chapter book for kids about dolls that are actually alive.

I got this book for my grand-daughter, who is 9, and not into reading for pleasure, hoping she would like it. She seemed so-so about it, but after I read the first chapter to her, she was hooked!! She immediately read the next 3 chapters to me.
I read the book beforehand, and it is a delightful, imaginative book, which really 'grabs' the young reader right away. A very worthwhile book to have.
