Not the worst, but not so great either. The premise is interesting (if you're into creepy), but the payoff is ultimately forgettable.
Maybe if the author had spent more time on character development and less time going on and on about the myraid thunderstorms. A little more resolution might have been better too.
On the plus side, it is a quick read. :)

Claire and Dave have been divorced since the kidnapping of their seven year old daughter, Ruby. Seven years later, they team up again when new evidence comes to light which sends them in a new direction. A doll - the spitting image of Ruby - appears in a shopkeepers window and immediately disappears and the proprieter of the shop is found murdered. Red flags go off in Claire's head and the hunt is on.
This is a good mystery but a real slow starter. The action doesn't begin until after page 200! I was very disappointed in this story as it had such potential but fell far from the mark. This is an author I would not read again

One of the main characters in this book Claire Doucett's daughter is kidnapped. The child was never found. Other children also disappear and will never be found. The dollmaker is to busy trying to duplicate one that will make him happy by using children as his model.A twisted mind at large. The book is a great read, one that you will not be able to put down until you get to the end.

Clare and Dave's young daughter disappeared seven years, without a trace. Dave found his solace in a bottle, leading to the end of his marriage. Claire has remarried, but that marriage is falling apart. When she sees a doll in a shop window, a doll that looks remarkably like her missing daughter, Clare turns to Dave, who is now sober and a private investigator, to find out what the dollmaker knows about their child's disappearance. Although the book has a good premise, and the characters of Clare, Dave and others are well developed, this book was for me neither suspenseful nor thrilling. I found it a solid read, but figured out the mystery fairly quickly and found nothing too remarkable about the book, I never felt that edge of the seat excitement I look for in books of this kind. A good, but pedestrian thriller.

I liked the book, but there were 2 different stories going on. Claire's ex-husband and the father of the missing girl is returning to life so to speak, and Stevens spends way too much time solving one of his old cases rather than moving us thru the story of the dollmaker and the 30 years history of his story. The only tie these stories have is that they share Claire and Dave, and the cops involved in the murder Dave is trying to solve, use Ruby's kidnapping to get Dave to destroy evidence. It wasted a good portion of the book, when i really wanted to know more about the dollmaker story. Too many holes. Stevens never ties up her books in neat little packages with all questions answered, but out of her 3 novels, i was disappointed in the path this book took. And the end did not satisfy me.
only a 2 1/2 star rating--it is very slow moving, every page is filled with descriptions, remembering, thinking, and the story just takes forever so I started skimming the pages just to pick up the story and ended up skipping a lot of it and getting more toward the back and didn't have a problem to find the 'reason' for the story. The characters are just very unlikable, sisters-one a wimp one bold and sleazy to sleep with her sisters ex-husband a self centered mother, one ex-husband an ex-cop(of course) was on the road to destruction by drinking(of course) and got a case implicating a bad cop (of course) the other ex-husband a cop and it just goes on and on---very disappointing
