I absolutely love G.A. Aiken (aka Shelly Laurenston). For you to like her too you have adore slapstick / crass humor, dirty language, and lots of cartoon violence. Every single one of her books make me laugh out loud. I really wish she would write faster because I truly devour her books.
This story takes place five years into the war. It follows dragons: Rhona and Vigholf. Needless to say reading all the other dragon books first would help you appreciate the history and all the other characters. It's not absolutely necessary but I think it just would be better. It isn't as funny as her previous books but it was still great.
It was a grand adventure and I love revisiting the other characters. Since it was a huge war, you get a nice update and cameos from almost everyone from the series. There was lots of fighting, romancing, and general two year old behaviors of dragons, mages, and human warriors. With all that, how can you not adore this paranormal romance?

First let me say, I thoroughly enjoyed the first 4 books. However, this one is not like the preceding books. It is mostly war and descriptions of violent behaviors. The relationship between Vigholf and Rhona is less than 10% of the book, and poorly fleshed out. If one has not read the preceding books then this book will be extremely confusing. Even though I read the first 4 books, one gets lost with all the characters, and the book offers little to enhance understanding of the previous characters. The humor is very minimal in this book, compared the first four. So for those who love to read war books, this one is for you. Based on my enjoyment of the first four books, I plan to read the next installment. But if Aiken continues writing as in book five, then I plan to cease reading the series.

I love Shelly Laurenston, even when shes being G.A. Aiken. Maybe especially when shes being Aiken since that is pen name she writes her Dragon Kin books under. As always, these books are full of quirky characters, lots of action, fun [and frequently snarky] dialog set in a complex world full of dragons, mages, humans and witches. And the gods, LOTS of gods, each with their own agendas. The living embodiment of the Chinese curse: May you live in interesting times
The hero is Vigholf, brother to Ragnar [hero of the last book], and seemed a somewhat typical Northerner in the last book. In this one you become aware of his intelligence, and the fact that his people skills are at least as strong as his warrior skills.
The heroine is Rona, one of the many Cadwaladr cousins. Despite the fact that all her siblings [and her mother the general] are Dragonwarriors or are soon to be so, Rona is a sergeant. She likes being a sergeant. Sergeants do what theyre told; they dont make policy, or decisions, or disobey orders because they think their way is better. It leaves her more time to do the important things: like taking care of her siblings, her cousins, and fighting with her mother.
The story starts five years after the end of the last book. The dragon war against the Iron dragons and the human war against the Quintilian Provinces are both stalemated, Garbhán Isle is under attack and the Gods have decided to stir things up.
Queen Annwyl deserts her troops and heads deep into the Quintilian Provinces [accompanied by Izzy and a young dragon] to foment rebellion
Kieta and Ren [with Rona and Viegholf] head back to Garbhán Isle to rescue the twins
The Dragon Queen orders Rona to retrieve Annwyl so she and Vigholf march off to the Quintilian Provinces to repossess the obviously insane queen
And then things start to get intense!
Warning these books are VERY connected, reading them out of order is NOT recommended.

Yes, there is a lot of war in this book. However, if you've read the previous 4, it was inevitable. From my perspective, I'm glad it was mostly shoved into 1 book instead of dragged out among several. Anyone familiar with stories of gods, they do like everything about a fight.
Having said all that, I did enjoy Rhona and Vigholf's story, and the the continuing sagas of all the many characters involved in this series. I'm intrigued to see what the 3 children are going to grow into. I like my happy endings, so I felt good when the fighting was over, everyone returned home, and all families were reunited. BUT... my sweet Eibhear... I had tears in my eyes and can only hope future installments will give him his happy ending.
