If you don't believe in dragons,
It is curiously true
That the dragons you disparage
Choose to not believe in you.

One of my favorite books as a child. With gorgeous illustrations and fun characters and wonderful writing, it remains a favorite of mine that I share with my young relatives and my campers at summer camp. Never had a child turn down a tale from this book.

This is a wonderful poetry book without being sappy or too silly or gross. Has a great sense of humor for young children and the pictures are great. Any book that I enjoy reading while standing in a book store and then again with a child, is a keeper.

I saw this book at the PA Renaissance Faire on Sunday and picked it up because I love dragons. I collect dragon statues, have honestly not read many dragon stories, but I was pleasantly surprised with this book full of rhyming poetry. The woman at the Faire's âScriptoriumâ (book store) said her favorite poem was called Nasty Little DragonSong, and that is definitely up there with some of my favorites too. It is hard to choose but I think my favorite is this one.

Once They All Believed In Dragons

Once they all believed in dragons
When the world was fresh and young,

We were woven into legends,

Tales were told and songs were sung,

We were treated with obeisance,

We were honored, we were feared,

Then one day they stopped believing â

On that day, we disappeared.

Now they say our time is over,

Now they say we've lived our last,

Now we're treated with derision

Where we once ruled unsurpassed.

We must make them all remember

In some way we must reveal

That our spirit lives forever -

We are Dragons! We are real!

I love dragons, and I love poetry, so it stands to reason that I would like this book. I did, to a point, but the poems seemed, after awhile, a bit contrived and forced, like Prelutsky had to write just a few more poems to make it a complete book, but the subjects may as well have been cows or houses or trains. There's not a lot of passion in the poems...yes, the poems are for children, but you still need passion to write poems at all.

Cute drawings and OK poems.
