Mairhe Mehan is a young Irish girl living in Washington, DC during the Civil War. Walt Whitman befriends and helps her when her beloved brother dies at Gettysburg and her father has a mental breakdown. This book and the second book, "Mary Mehan Awake" touched my heart.
