It is a good book though not amoung Wiggs best works. It still has an engaging story and memorable chracters.

I just finished reading about Dr Leah Mundy and her place in the world
She is feisty, intelligent, committed and at last in love
I enjoyed her journey
MS Wiggs always shows a fine touchwith her Hometown, USA
and here she did it 100 years ago
Nice summer readings Try her!

Interesting story, typical Susan Wiggs, I enjoyed it...
Great historical romance.
Mira, historical romance, 1998
Jackson Underhill was on the run, an outlaw from his past.Dr. Leah Mundy made him feel things and it scared him. He couldn't afford to stay his past would catch up to him someday and would need to run again.
Wiggs (Lord of the Night) turns an able and sensual hand to the old story of the capable, straitlaced spinster and the sensual roving rogue. Leah, whose whole life has been devoted to hard work, and whose self-esteem as a woman has been undermined by a charlatan father, allows herself to dream of a home and family with Jackson (including the social acceptance she never receives as a female in a typically male profession). And Underhill, the sexy drifter who has never belonged anywhere, dreams of coming home each night to his passionate physician and an extended family of endearing misfits. It's a smart, unorthodox coupling to which Wiggs adds humor, brains and a certain cultivation that will leave readers anticipating her next romance.
Comes a drifter to a windswept island . . .
He wanted to tell her everything. About the lost years that had changed him from a desperate young boy into a man hardened by life. About the night he'd sold his soul for a woman who wasn't worth the price . . .
But Jackson Underhill said nothing. After all, he was an outlaw, clearly on the run -- reason enough for silence.
The truth was Dr. Leah Mundy scared him. She made him want to trust again, to share his burden. She made him want a home, a family. And it was dangerous to want such things. Because the past would find him if he stayed -- and there could be no future with a woman who would not leave.
