In Dubious Battle
Author: John Steinbeck
In the strike-bound landscape of 1930s California, work is as scarce as it is hard, and a day's wages are designed to provide nothing more than a day's food. This forerunner to "The Grapes of Wrath" portrays a vicious clash between exploiter and exploited, scab and striker, cop and migrant.

Written before "Grapes of Wrath, it's about the revolt of the fruit pickers in California. Good read.

A classic Steinbeck tale about the struggle of labor vs. management. Some may call it socialist, but I believe it illustrates the necessity of unionism. A great read.

It was one of my favorites when I was in my 20's. Now, in my 50's, I re-read it, and see things a bit differently. But still a good book.

At supper one night---when I was 16 or 17---I told my parents I was thinking of committing suicide. When they asked why, I told them I had read everything John Steinbeck had written, so why go on. Of course, I was kidding about the suicide, but not about having read all his books. What a great author.

While not popular with everyone, In Dubious Battle is probably my favorite of all his books.

A riveting novel of labor strife and apocolyptic violence that maps the frontier where the masses become a mob.
