This is an older book, But it's always one of my favorites. It concentrates more on the characters & how they affect other people and each other than purly about the romantic parts.

Set in the late 1800's. Claire sets off to Scotland to marry a duke. There she meets an eccentric relative, Trevelyan who makes her question herself.
It is a good read and has a suprise ending.

lgood read- late 1800's Claire Willoughby had to wed an "acceptable man to keep her millions.

Claire Willoughby risked losing millions in her inheritance if, as decreed by her grandfather, she did not wed an "acceptable" man. Harry Montgomery, the eleventh Duke of MacArran, seemed perfect. He owned a historic castle, he looked manly in a kilt, and he was as much a titled Scotsman as Bonnie Prince Charlie himself.

Their engagement announced, Claire's future as a duchess was assured -- and she set off with her family to meet the Montgomery clan in Scotland. Bramley Castle was a damp, chill place, overflowing with eccentric relatives. But there was also Trevelyan, a secretive, brooding man who lived in Bramley's ancient halls. Whoever he was, he wasn't at all like Harry: Trevelyan was the most exasperating, arrogant, know-it-all of a man Claire had ever met. And the most fascinating...

CLAIRE WILLOUGHBY WAS A MODERN AMERICAN GIRL OF THE LATE 1800S FRESH, PRACTICAL, ENERGETIC, AND WIDE EYED WITH CURIOSITY. A CLAUSE IN HER GRANDFATHER'S WILL SAID THAT SHE MUST WED AN "ACCEPTABLE" MAN TO KEEP HER MILLIONS, AND BLOND HANSOME HARRY MONTGOMERY, THE ELEVENTH DUKE OF MACARRAN, WAS PERFECT. THEIR ENGAGEMENT WAS QUICKLY ANNOUNCED, AND CLAIRE SET OFF WITH HER ENTIRE FAMILY TO MEET THE MONTGOMERY CLAN IN SCOTLAND. BRAMLEY CASTLE WAS A DAMP, CHILLY PLACE, OVERFLOWING WITH ECCENTRIC MONTGOMERY RELATIVE. BUT THERE WAS ALSO TREVELYAN, A MAN OF GREAT MYSTERY. WHOEVER HE WAS, HE WASN'T AT ALL LIKE HARRY, TREVELYAN WAS THE MOST EXASPERATING,ARROGANT, KNOW IT ALL OF A MAN CLAIRE HAD EVER MET. AND THE MOST FASCINATING.

Different cover on mine - red with pearls and portrait. LOVE this book, great read, a little more involved and intense than your average historical romance.
