At first this book was a little hard to get into but as I went along I couldn't put it down. This story is empowering and heartbreaking all at once because of the forshadowing that happens throughout the book. You just know that Jodie is going to break down even as Mack is trying to heal and the kids just need a little faith and attention... It was a pretty good read.

This book is written in beautifully rendered prose. The characters are full of life, rich and realistic in their depiction. They carry you to the highs and lows of their experience letting you share in their joys and heartache. Overall, this is a very enjoyable read and a wonderful way to spend the time of reading. I highly recommend this to readers who enjoy an in-depth story of hope and survival.

A fascinating study of function and disfunction in a family and community. We found the novel depressing at times, wishing the people could find a way out of their challenges, but understanding that was not possible. The characters are real and caught up in their lives from which they cannot escape. However, the novel does end on with a note of hope.

Excellent author and excellent read about an Iowan family that gives up farming. I would definitely read another book by this author.
