I liked this one best of the 5 I've read thus far. The extra detail didn't seem to go on as long any more, often just enough to give you a clear picture in your mind instead of cause your mind to wander. The mystery kept me in thrall until the very end, when it all came together in a surprise ending. Kinsey is still a workaholic, but has begun to reevaluate her life and actually thinks about things other than work and her caseload now. :)

At the beginning, I thought it would bother me that Kinsey was framed to look as if she was on the take, because usually when this happens in a story, all the other characters operate under the false assumption that she's guilty, automatically believing the frame without taking into account that she wouldn't do this, and in the long run it really screws with everything else in the story. It's really a pet peeve of mine... Instead, Kinsey and most of the other primary characters worked to find out what was really going on and who had set her up, which led to a much deeper and intricate plot to be uncovered.

Grafton does it again! This book follows Kinsey Millhone on another adventure, but this time Kinsey is doing the work for herself. She is being framed and doesn't know why. But, as always, she finds out and gets her man!

So far this my favorite in the series. I did not see some of the twists in it. I did wonder about the link from a past death to the current events but again, did not see the connection until a little tid-bit of someone's past was brought to light. And then, you wonder why the person killed one of the characters.

This story is much better then the last "alphabet" mystery I read. The sene is set w/ an industrial explosion, and the turn of events keeps you wondering "who done it". In the end, of course, you never saw it coming and the most unlikely of characters has preformed the deadliest of deeds. Hope you enjoy this one as much as I did.

My all time favorite author. She writes a series of books featuring the main character, Kinsey Millhone, a single woman, private detective. Lives in CA and gives us glimpses of that area. Each story has some common characters, lifestyle of Kinsey. She is most focused on the mystery before the romance or sex which I prefer. Read every book and she keeps me waiting for the next in the series. Long live Sue Grafton so we can at least get to the end of the alphabet.

This time Kinsey is her own detective. She is looking for someone who is framing her in a case she has taken for California Fidelity insurance company. We meet her 2nd exhusband in this book and we find out something about him that explains why he walked out on her 8 years before. A can't put down til you finish book.

A nice fast read, I finished it in a few hours. Still good 30 years later, with what seems to me is a good balance between the mystery and Kinsey's personal life. I very much liked the plot, which starts out as a possible insurance fraud but ramps up into something else quickly. And despite having read the book years ago, I didn't remember whodunit. I think the only quibble I might have is that the motive comes out of the blue (if there were clues I missed them) but in fact I enjoyed that too as it gave the puzzle a twist I wasn't expecting. When her ex-husband shows up, we see quite a lot more emotion from Kinsey than we've seen in other books, that was interesting.

I enjoy Kinsey Millhone's adventures as a private investigator but this book started with what I assume is a typo and through the first four or five chapters it jumps back and forth between events on December 24 and 27th. You have no way of knowing what happened when and the jumps caused me to stop and reread passages to try to figure out what was going on. For example: the first line of the book is "it was Monday, December 27". 2 pages later in the same chapter "the only signs of Christmas, two days away..." HUH? The inconsistences were aggravating and took too much time to backtrack to figure it out.

Regardless of these issues, it was a great mystery and worth the read even though confusing as hell. This is book five in the series and only 200 pages long - someone should have paid more attention to the details.

I always think when I begin one of Kinsey Milhon's stories that the book is terribly slim. But I'm never disappointed in the way the story is written.

The plot is great, as it is in all of this author's A to Z novels, and the plot is what makes a mystery good. Kinsey Millhone, the private investigator and main character has a distinct voice and keen observation skills making her views on surrounding society right on the money without being condescending.

Another great one from Grafton. The clues were there the whole time, but until the very last chapter, neither the reader nor Kinsey knew what was really going on. Mystery writers talk about the inevitability of the revelation, that the ending should seem to the reader to be obvious in retrospect. Grafton weaves this thread masterfully throughout. "E" is for excellent.

While private detective and former cop Kinsey Millhone is investigating a possible case of industrial arson involving a company owned by the family of a former schoolmate, someone tries to make it look as if she's on the take. A mysterious $5000 appears in her bank account. She sets out to clear herself, while two or possibly more cases of murder occur, including one by bombing. A Christmas spent alone and the reappearance of her second ex-husband, Daniel, who had deserted her, add to Kinsey's depression. Grafton has an accurate, wicked eye for California lifestyle and wise-cracking Kinsey is an appealing, nonhackneyed female detective. Particularly illuminating are the descriptions of document searches, which make up much of real detective work today. This fifth entry in the series, however, is not quite up to the standards of its predecessors because the motivation for the crimes seems weak. That caveat notwithstanding, readers will be glad that further letters of the alphabet await Grafton's imagination.

'E' is for evidence; evidence planted, evidence lost. 'E' is for ex-lovers and evasions, enemies and endings. For Kinsey, 'E' is for everything she stands to lose if she can't exonerate herself: her license, her livelihood, her good name. And so she takes on a new client: namely, Kinsey Millhone, thirty-tow fand twice divorced, excop and wisecracking loner, a California private investigator with a penchant for lost causes--one of which, it is to be hope, is not herself.

Was interesting and had a great little twist to it.
