I gave this book a 3 star rating because I have mixed feelings. I must admit that I was confused for the first 100 pages or so. Once I finally figured out what was going on, the story was easier to follow and the actions/dialogue of the characters made sense.
By the end of the book, I was really enjoying it. It included an overriding theme that I normally do not select--and which is not mentioned in the description. Since that particular theme (I won't be a spoiler) is featured throughout the majority of the book, I believe the omission is intentional because they (the publisher probably) felt it might cause her usual readers to stay away.
Ultimately, I'm glad I gave this book a chance. It does not rank among my top favorites, but was an enjoyable, diverting little book that ended stronger than it began.

I must say that this book was quiet a surprise to me. I picked it up on whim. I had read one of Anne Mallory's books and liked it very much.
This story is about childhood friends who were torn apart by a secret and misunderstandings. As adults, these characters, they treated each other with disdain publically, while privately, they longed for each other.
Through an attack on Valerian, they are able to work together to find out who attacked him and their friendship is rekindled.
Abigail is a strong character who has gone through a lot and has remained grounded. she could have easily been cynical and jaded. I didn't like Valerian at first, but as the book went on, he redeemed himself.
This book showed insight on how people who were different from the norm were treated and how doctors took advantage of patients all in the name of science.
Although the description on the back is very vague, i took a chance. I was confused for the fiirst few chapters, but i must say, i was glad that i persevered and read on. this story turned out to be great. I won't spoil the book and reveal the reason behind the confusion.

Only 1/2 star...awful!
Beware, no where in the synopsis does it tell you that for 90% of this book the Earl is some sort of spirit (not dead, not alive, weird) that only the heroine can see and she is trying to help him... it was soooo bad that I skipped over a vast majority of it to read the ending... If you like historical romances that are farfetched and totally unrealistic then you will like this, otherwise don't waste your credit.
