Rosemary Mahoney set off in the late 1980s for a year long exchange to teach at Hangzhou University in China. The record of her experiences is fascinating, revealing much about the culture and people one year before Tiananmen Square. This book is not a fun, easy read, but brings the reader face to face with the realities of China at that time period.

This is a great book. I spent a year in China teaching back in 2008, quite a few years after Mahoney's year in Hangzhou. This book really gives you the flavor for living as an expat in one of the big Chinese cities. You can be in a place but at the same time, not be fully a part of that place -- recommended for anyone considering living and teaching in China.
