Reminiscent of a less-ditzy version of Lisa Douglas in Hooterville. This is the book that introduced the public to the characers Ma and Pa Kettle, who later became the subject of several films, and came to represent "hick" America for a generation or more.

She thinks that chickens are dumb and has a chapter about how she hates baby chicks. Bitter old coot! I have chickens and although they are not rocket scientists they are not dumb. I thought this book would be warm and inspiring like "Little Heathens," but it is not. Grouchy author!

Was very disappointed in this book. Had not expected the profanity. It was humorous in parts, but mostly it just seemed to be a lot of complaining and bitterness. Will not be keeping this book.

This book was also the basis for the popular movies about Ma and Pa Kettle, and I believe they also did a movie from the book itself. It is an entertaining book, and the descriptions are such that you feel you are right there in the middle of the tribulations.

Hilariously wry humor! An also-ran teen marries a much older man, is hornswoggled, hog-tied, and bamboozled into following him into the chicken ranch business. Where? Why in western Washington logging country; that's where! What ensues is a witty, heartwarming glimpse into the daily drudgery of farm life amid the local populace: the Kettles, the Hicks, loggers, Indians, oops, Native Americans, moonshiners, and dipsomaniacs. You can almost smell the countryside.

I used to think this was one of the funniest books I ever read. On rereading it, I found it rather racist toward native Americans. The descriptions about the neighbors is hilarious - the basis of the Ma and Pa Kettle series.
