This is not my favorite science writer, nor my favorite travel writer, but this still is a great book to read. Perhaps he strikes the perfect balance between the two genres or the subject matter is just so interesting makes it a great read. In case it doesn't give a blurb in the details, the writer/travelogue covers the extremely unique people, flora, fauna and history of Madagascar. That hardly does it justice though. Really, by exploring the geographical, ecological and anthropological history of the huge island, it covers the history of all humans, their cultural development, and the most fascinating parts of nature and evolution.
Because he explores Madagascar by joining research scientists in the field, it is also a great way for people who might be interested in becoming a naturalist/scientist to learn more about exactly what they do. Granted these researchers are 'stars' in their fields and 20 years into their careers, so it won't be exactly what you might find starting out, but is still helpful.
