Abnett outdid himself with this series, still considered one of the best trilogies in the 40K world. There is something for everyone here: intrigue, action, romance, love, hatred, betrayal, sweeping destruction, rebirth and loss. Eisenhorn as a character is a strong person with a few flaws, who tries hard to work within guidelines in pursuing his vocation as an inquisitor, but just can't get it done without bending the rules a bit, due to circumstances beyond his control. You will laugh and cry with him as he tries to remain true to himself while attempting to save everyone around him and still seek the justice demanded by the inquisition upon the galaxy. Fans of the TV series 24 could probably compare Gregor Eisenhorn to agent Jack Bauer, in his sincerity and loyalty but willingness to break the rules when necessary, even in the face of great loss to himself. This is a wonderful character who is so much larger than life, but still greatly affected by it.
I couldn't put this down until I had read every word, and still wanted more. If you still are hungry for more after this, try Ravenor. It's neat how the two characters are intertwined throughout two different series.
I would give this ten stars if it were possible. One of the very best 40k series and it stands up to some of the best sci-fi novels out there as well. This omnibus also includes the short stories associated with the series, which makes it a great value.
