I just loved this book. I am not swapping it but since it has no reviews I wanted to post one for those who are curious about it. The book is fascinating to me personally being od Italian American heritage, my family came to NY through Ellis Island so the tale is close to home based on stories I heard from them.
The characters are vivid and likeable. it is not hard to follow but it is not simple. The main character is very easy to identify with and she resonates with my maternal instinct.

I loved this book. I found the description of Italy vivd and beautiful. Loved the characters, they helped me to understand the issues my mother and grandparents faced. The main character Giovanna is inspirational and strong.

Fabiano writes the untold story of Italian immigrant experiences at the beginning of the twentieth century. The Costa's and other Italians from Scilla, Italy came to New York. Giovanna is widowed while her husband is in America seeking a new start for their lives by finding employment. She eventually comes to America trying to build a life. She endures personal tragedies, remarries and her new family is threatened by the Black Hand, a gang of brutal extortionists led by Lupo the wolf. The book is a great read. I learned much about the Italian Black Band; the book kept me very interested in reading to the last page.
I loved this book, and I learned some things too. The events of this book were true, based on the author's family. Set in a small Italian village, beginning in 1890, the scene transfers to New York as some of the family move there.
Going back and forth between New York and Italy, it is filled with both the joys and sorrows of an extended family, this story really draws you in, and you care about what happens to the men, women and children.
This book is for anyone who values history and/or the things in all our lives that make us who we are.

It was an interesting story but I was bored during much of the book.
