Book Description
Book Club Edition. 312 pages. It is the mid-18th century in New Orleans, and the former French colony is seething with unrest and violence in the aftermath of the Spanish takeover. Proud 19-year-old Felicite LaFargue, like her French compatriots, will do anything--even die--rather than bow to foreign rule. Then her beloved father and stepbrother are arrested for plotting insurrection, and her political resolve fades. She must save them, even if it means offering her favors to the arrogant Lt. Colonel Morgan McCormack in exchange for their lives. At first, all the handsome Irish mercenary asks is for her company in public. But then Valcour escapes, and thinking the vile foreigner shares his sister's bed, he tries to kill McCormack. McCormack, convinced Felicite has conspired against him, takes his revenge. He rapes her... and from that moment on she is his prisoner, the unwilling mistress of a man she despises. Until one night, disguised as a young gentleman, she flees on a ship called The Raven--bound, she believes, for her homeland of France. Instead, it carries her on a voyage she's never dreamed of -- to the pirate-infected waters of Las Tortugas island and face to face with her stepbrother's lust, her own murderous rage, and a passionate love she never knew she could feel. In the tradition of the best historical romances, Embrace and Conquer is an adventure-filled novel of lust, revenge and smoldering love.

After the first 40 pages I ended up scanning the rest of the book. I felt detached from the H/H. The author didn't explain enough, in my opinion, of why or how they fell madly in love with each other. There's a thin line between love and hate... I understood the hate, but the love? no. The story was only one sided that we didn't know what it was about her that captured him? What kind of person was she that he felt so strongly about her? I guess what I'm trying to say is, I didn't feel connection between the two to be so entralled with each other to the point of obsession. *shrugs*
