This story reminded me of Joy in the Morning or A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. It is a heartwarming story that takes place in Brooklyn in 1963 at the time of the assassination of JFK. I want to read more from Denis Hamill!

Sad tale (most of it) of a poor family in Brooklyn, the story starts in 1960, with JFK's election, goes through his assassination and the Christmas of 1963. The problem Ihad with the story, was with the several Beatle's references. I think the author got a little ahead of himself. Most Americans didn't know much about the Beatles in November of 1963-but otherwise not a bad book.

Rory is a 14 year old kid growing up in an Irish tenement in Brooklyn. The family's sadness is deepened when Kennedy is killed. Rory's determination and constant drive to find the truth about his fathers service in the Merchant Marine for himself and his family push him on.Ultimately they are the richer having the best gift of love in their home. And helping to reunite a long separated father and son.
This was a quick, enjoyable Christmas read. One that I would recommend.
