I knew I wasn't going to want to put this one down as I was turning to the second page! Who knew being ultra-ordinary could turn out to be so interesting?
I share Katie's crush on Owen - the second he started blushing I was a goner. Why is he so bashful? What's up with his background? More Owen, please!
Anyway, the book has a few small flaws (the Mr. Mervyn character didn't work seemlessly, and a little more detail about the background of the magical world would have been nice), but they really don't detract from the story or from the fun of reading it.
Chick lit meets an inverted version of Harry Potter, and it really works. After this it was really hard to wait for the next books!

OK, I'll be trite and say that this book is ENCHANTING! The characters are so charming (pun intended) from the normal roommates to Katie's dreadful blind dates. Jeff the frog stalker, Owen the geeky wizard, Ari and Trix the fairy chicks, Sam the gargoyle...I could go on but I've given enough away. Pleased to say that there are at least 3 books so far.

Transplanted Texan Katie Chandler isn't sure what to make of New York City. She sees fairies and elves on the subway and a gargoyle that only sometimes perches on a local church. At first she ignores the mysterious e-mails about a job opportunity at a company called MSI but finally agrees to a meeting. She learns that MSI stands for Magic, Spells, and Illusions and that she is valuable to the company because she is immune to magic of any kind. Intrigued by the job and a handsome wizard named Owen, Katie signs on. Before long, she has come up with a slew of innovative ideas and drawn the attention of the head of the company, Merlin himself, who is dealing with a former prodigy gone bad. Swendson offers a quirky twist on supernatural powers, suggesting that not having any can actually be an asset. This appealing novel offers a charming cast of characters and a clever premise, and readers will hope that Katie's skills will be needed in New York City again soon.

In March 2011, I had a house fire and lost everything. I was then diagnosed with PTSD. Because of it, I couldn't read anymore without getting dizzy, nauseous, or understand what I had just read. For 10 months I tried to read as I LOVED reading books and missed it. I ended up picking up this book and thank the heavens, it was light, airy, funny, and all around enjoyable..I was able to read it all the way through! My first book since the fire & PTSD!!! This book has the right mix of fun, romance, yet a good story line. Classic chic-lit without any mush! It's definitely a different twist on a small town girl moving to the big city and her take on life and how she sees things!

In one word - the book was "charming". I think it has a sweet, uncomplicated appeal to it. Nice texan girl comes to New York and makes good using her common sense. I also like the idea of a secret side to the city, and the author does incorporate a lot of New York into the story. There is also a lot of interesting aspects to the magical world that the author included in the story (like how many frogs in Central Park really are princes and the hijinks that ensue when Katie gets talked into going to kiss some with her tipsy female coworkers). I'm having a little trouble categorizing the genre of this book though. The romance is so light I don't even know if I should mention it, but I think it's possibly going to come up more in following books. I think it comes closest to being chick-lit. Except ..I guess I'm used to chick-lit books being more stand-alone than this book feels (first in a series).

This is full of great characters and equally great stories! It's like Harry Potter meets Sex and the City! If you like either of those, or any of the vampire series, you will love these series of books!

enjoyable, quick read. Katie comes from small town Texas to magical New York ... which is weirder that she was expecting - from guys with elf ears to disappearing trolls and girls with fairy wings - and no one else seems to notice. How jaded is this town? Follow Katie's story of what it's like to be completely ordinary in a magical world ... and get to save the world and find true love on the way.

Ever since her move from Texas to New York, Katie Chandler has been seeing some weird things. Things like guys who appear to summon the subway with a flick of their wrist, young ladies who wear wings and seem to float above the ground and stone gargoyles that move from one building to another. Little does she know that her normally boring life is about to get really weird.
This book caught my interest on page one and kept it throughout the story. The heroine is an independent business woman with common sense and a great sense of humor. Just the sort of gal you'd like to be friends with. The rest of the characters, from an enamored frog "prince" to the legendary Merlin, provide an amusing and fast-paced tale.

Katie Chandler learns that Magic is real and she can "see" it and that it has no effect on her what so ever. Not to mention the biggest magic companies around wants to hire her and Merlin is her boss!!!!
I laughed so hard reading this book!! I especially loved Sam the Gargoyle and the frogs!!
This books is a must read!!!

I absolutely loved this book - had a hard time putting it down ;)
Good book, will continue series.
I so Love this author. I have all her books and waiting and hoping for her movie deal to go through and for book 5 to come out. If you love fantasy, humor and chick-lit this is the book for you. Meet an ordinary woman in a fantastic career.
The Ending was a bit disappointing but over all A good Book!
AWESOME book. I can understand why it is still on many's wish lists. The whole series is just great! Fun to read, great story line and wonderful characters. If you liked Harry Potter, you will adore this book! Katie is so easy to imagine and Shanna writes like a true pro. It pulls you right in and is a major page turner. I wouldn't recommend starting this book at night when you need to get up early in the morning. The whole series kept me up past my bed time quite frequently!
A really cute fun read! I throughly enjoyed it! I also appreciated the originality of the heroine being 100% magic free!
After spending time running her family's farming business (I think it was called the Seed and Feed), Katie Chandler moved to New York to work as an average, everyday business assistant -- or glorified secretary with a BBA. Here her boss, who has a definite Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde complex, tweaks her out daily by making her feel like incompetent, invaluable, hick/outsider from Texas. After spending a year in this dead end job, she is approached by two (fairly attractive) men, and a winged girl on the subway. Katie thinks that this winged "Airy Fairy" girl is just another NYU fashion major trying out a new trend, but she soon finds out that her world is not quite that logically explained. See, Katie is an immune -- a completely non-magical being -- and it is because of this "power" (or lack thereof) that she is being sought out by Ms. "Airy Fairy" and her two handsome companions. It seems she would be a very valuable asset to their company, MSI, Inc. (Magic, Spells, and Illusions, Inc.) -- and oddly enough, that is just the beginning.
I really enjoyed this book, it was too cute!

What a fun read. The characters are so lovable and the author really knows how to keep your attention until the end.
Wonderfully lighthearted and entertaining.
Light and funny with a magical twist.
Nicely realized world, engaging heroine, interesting problem although not sure why the villain was bad enough for them to have called Merlin out of the mists...although of course the worst could be yet to come. A nice fluffy fantasy romance, just the ticket when you're in the right mood.
I was very amused by this book. The story is unusual, and that's what I'm always looking for. Maybe this explains why I'm always seeing those people with wings ...
