While in the books previous to The Enemy in the series Jack Reacher is a bit of an enigmatic mystery, this story fills in some of that history. It also explains certain relationships as well as why Reacher's disillusionment with the Army resulted in his exit. This story also gives a good understanding of the authority the 110th has in policing the Army and the extent to which rank doesn't matter when a possible crime has been committed. Plus, you get an appreciation for the basic rivalries between different elements, especially as the Wall came down in 1989 and what that change meant to the military and its leaders. Good read.

I bet this is a pretty good series, if you start at book #1. I did not. This was my first Lee Child and first of this series. I found it just okay - but I contribute that to listening to the abridged version which can sometimes feel like you are listening on fast forward.
