When you are considering which edition of this book to acquire, this ISBN, published in 1979, is the movie tie-in cover featuring actress Lee Remick. "The Europeans" is a shorter, lighter Henry James in his earlier years and may be more accessible than "Portrait of a Lady" or "The Golden Bowl" to the reader just beginning to read James. Yet, the Jamesian characters are there in abundance, poor European royalty and rich Americans alike in a lovely setting.
Artist Felix Young and his sister The Baroness Munster journey from Europe to America. They track down their relatives, and Felix becomes smitten with cousin Gertrude. However, Felix must compete with a young local man for Gertrude's hand. (Apparently the fact that they are not related does not give the other man an advantage.) All ends happily, with kissing cousins.
