Everything Bad is Good for You
Author: Steven Johnson
Forget everything you've read about the age of dumbed-down, instant-gratification culture. In this provocative, intelligent, and convincing endorsement of today's mass entertainment, national bestselling author Steven Johnson argues that the pop culture we soak in every day-from The Lord of the Rings to Grand Theft Auto to The S...  more »-has been growing more and more sophisticated and, far from rotting our brains, is actually posing new cognitive challenges that are making our minds measurably sharper. You will never regard the glow of the video game or television screen the same way again.

The author uses sociological and intellectual analysis to discuss how film, television, the internet and videogames are actually creating more analytical members of society, despite the anti-technology hype. The first few pages are a bit dry but keep reading, the tone is casual and even funny later on.

A very interesting read. The author points out that pop culture has actually become more complicated over time and believes that the increase in complexity is making us smarter.

While I don't agree with many of his assertions (video games are as good or better than reading? not when you factor in brain utilization), his rhetoric is quite interesting and his arguments are compelling.
