Copyright 2001. This is a Newbery Honor Book - with good reason. Humorous, with well round characterizations, and an unique, interest-catching plot. As with most Newbery Honor Books everyone will enjoy reading it, 3rd or 4th grade through adult. 11 year old Primrose stands on her own two funny feet as she lives through what could be disaster after disaster but in Primrose's recounting and the way she lives it is just another chance to move on in life. All the characters move to their own particular drummer - some successfully (although maybe not in the establishments eyes) and others not quite so successfully. This story goes straight for the funny bone in your heart.

This is a great book that is a NEWBERY HONOR book! It is a wonderful book for children of all ages!!
The book is filled with recipes. It was interesting and the reason I did not give it more stars is that not all children go back home in foster care. Polly Horvath sets children up for wishful thinking as they do not all go home. I read it because I'm a kinship caregiver. I found the characters were interesting and enjoyed the descriptions. Insights into areas of how the system works were good as to how educators see children at risk. Not an in depth view in that regards but fairly accurate.
I bought this book for my 9 year old granddaughter, but I read it first and thoroughly enjoyed it. It dealt with serious topics in an appropriate manner for children. The ending was wonderful!
