A man is found murdered in an isolated monastery well after several monks report becoming ill. No identification is found but a small patch of skin has been removed under his arm. A woman from the sultan's orchestra dies from a miscarriage. Or was it? A pasha who was once Yashim's mentor disappears. Why did he disappear? A young boy runs away from a specialk school. Are any of these incidents connected? Can Yashim find the boy and solve the mystery of the deaths and the pasha's disappearance?

Yashim, the sultan's investigator searches for answers throughout the city. Fevzi Ahmet, the pasha, taught Yashim everything he knows about searching for the truth but he is a cruel man whom many fear, including Yashim. Once again Goodwin has written a complex mystery that keeps this reader turning page after page to figure out what is happening. I did figure out that a certain character was involved in some of it all but not how and why. This is a mystery that pulls the reader deeper and deeper in the culture of 1839 Istanbul and the people's lives of the period. I like this author and pick up one of is books whenever I find one. Well done!
